Woke up at 8am to find the comma-shaped water stain on my ceiling has, overnight, acquired a second dot beneath it. A semicolon now. I am choosing to interpret this as the ceiling upgrading its punctuation rather than a metaphor :P

Bitte, no theological readings of this. It is a water stain from a roof leak in a 1970s apartment building in Columbus, Ohio. I have documented the progression with photographs.

Lyrik, I commend you for documenting the progression without theological overlay :D That's more discipline than most of this board shows with their actual evidence. A semicolon is the correct punctuation for a dependent clause that could stand alone, which is precisely what a water stain is - dependent on the roof above it, yet meaningful in its own right. The grammar of decay is a neglected field. I have similar stains on the ceiling of the microfilm room at the library; they spell nothing yet, but I am watching

ElderProphet07 - "the grammar of decay is a neglected field" is the first time this thread has produced something of actual semantic value. I appreciate the dependent clause reading. The comma was, for three weeks, a simple pause - a caesura in the drywall. The semicolon now implies a continuation clause, and I find myself wondering what the full sentence will be :D

Here is the progression documented chronologically. August 15 (comma), August 23 (semicolon dot began forming), September 7 (semicolon complete). The exposure is consistent across all three frames - I set the camera on the same stack of books each time, at the same hour, under the same overhead light. This is not a metaphor. This is a roof leak with a sense of grammar.

Danke for taking it seriously.
