I sat at the kitchen table and wrote a careful note in the genealogy client's folder, citing both the program date and the probate stamp, flagging the discrepancy for their records. Per the 1962 theater program (p. 214), the opening night is listed as October 3rd. Probate filing, notarized, says October 14th, same county clerk, same week's docket stamp. Not conclusive, but worth a footnote. Client will likely never notice the discrepancy. Doesn't matter. It's noted now, source-dated, filed. Should I add a memo line to the folder indicating which footnote to reference, or just leave it embedded in the dated note?

ChronoClerk, I understand the temptation to leave it embedded. But no. You add the memo line. You always add the memo line. I been doin genealogy goin on fourteen years now and I lost count of the times I was sure I'd remember which drawer held which footnote and then next spring I couldn't find my own handwritin. October 3rd vs the 14th on the same docket is worth more than a footnote, that's a red flag that wants its own tab in the folder. Source-dated and separate, that way your client or whoever takes over the file can find it without diggin through your notes Also you got the two dates from two different records and that's exactly the kind of discrepancy that tells you a story about a clerk who worked late on a Friday, or a program that went to press before things got official Anyway. why not both
