had an argument today with some clown at the späti who tried to tell me CDs "sound warmer." right, and vinyl sounds like a campfire crackling over a phone line. Müll. absolute Müll. i've been sitting here staring at my shelf of plastic frisbees wondering what i was thinking.

the compact disc was a format designed by committees. it sounds like a spreadsheet. it looks like a clear jewel case full of regret. you buy a CD in 2006 you are basically telling the universe you enjoy being sold the same 12 tracks twice (once on the disc, once in the booklet) and you enjoy the ritual of watching a laser not-read a scratch while you sit there like a monk waiting for track 4 to stop skipping.

but of course some people need their physical media because "what if the internet goes down." what if you get a life instead? you're not preserving culture, you're hoarding coasters. i've got a friend who still buys CDs and he organizes them alphabetically and i have to look at him and pretend we're the same species.

the format died when they stopped making the cases that actually snapped shut properly. you know the ones. they cracked if you looked at them wrong. every CD collection is 30% broken jewel cases and 70% denial. :dumb:

and don't get me started on the people who say "but the liner notes." the liner notes are an insert with the lyrics printed in a font size that requires a magnifying glass and a photo of the band standing near a wall looking moody. i don't need a 12cm piece of plastic to tell me the bassist was sad that day.

i'm burning my collection this weekend and uploading the mp3s to soulseek. if you want to come collect the shards for your shrine you can PM me but don't expect me to respect you afterward.

Nacht.
