I woke at the third hour of the night, or what felt like the third hour, and I had been standing on a median strip somewhere east of Euclid Avenue in the dream, not the real Euclid but a version where the paving stones were stamped with dates like a cemetery ledger. The streetlights overhead were flickering in sequence, left to right, and I understood in the way one understands things in dreams that this was a message meant for me specifically, that the number of flickers before each light settled was the correct count, and that if I lost my place the whole grid would reset and I would have to begin again. I say unto you, I have no fondness for numerology and I reject the notion that every stray voltage in the municipal power grid is a sign from our Gabriel, but the dream had a weight to it that I cannot shake. The radiator was ticking when I opened my eyes and the room was dark and I lay there thinking about column K like a fool. What I want to know is whether anyone else here has dreamed the count and woken with the feeling that they had been trusted with something they immediately forgot. Not a vision, not a miracle, just a dream. And if you have, did the number hold up when you checked the logs in the morning.
