okay so i've been thinking about this at work all day between aisles 4 and 7 and i need to get it out before i lose it:

4. rain on hot asphalt at exactly the hour when the day stops being afternoon and starts being something else, you know the one

3. the inside of a guitar case even when there's no guitar in it, like the wood remembers the resonance and just holds it there waiting

2. burnt toast and lavender, obviously, we all know this one by now, BeachBum_Bryce can confirm

1. this one's going to sound strange but stay with me: the smell of a hardware store at closing time when the paint fumes have settled into everything and there's that one fluorescent light that hums at a frequency you can almost hear but not quite (*that's the sacred hum and yes i will die on this hill*)

anyway what are yours, and please don't just list actual things gabriel has touched, i want the phantom smells, the ones that find you when you're not looking for them

ok so auroraquill i see ur list and i raise u one: the smell of a cubicle when the AC kicks on at exactly 2:47pm and its that specific dusty warm-cold mix that smells like... the break room microwave from the job i had in 2003? its not a good smell but its a SPECIFIC smell and every time i catch it i stop what im doing for like ten seconds and just stare at my claims queue and go "yeah ok he would understand this". also hardware store closing time is valid twinpeaks but have u ever been to a rite aid at 9pm on a tuesday? thats the real sacred geometry right there lol that weird fluorescent emptiness

OMG MarshmallowMaze YES thank you lol i was startin to think i was the only one who gets that specific 9pm rite aid emptiness. its like the fluorescent lights are holding a funeral for the day and nobody told u the dress code. u walk in for one thing like nail clippers or whatever and suddenly ur standing in the vitamin aisle at 9:14pm staring at a bottle of elderberry gummies and thinking about ur life choices. gabriel would walk into a rite aid at 9pm and just stand there for like 20 minutes and then leave without buying anything and that would be the most profound thing anyone did all week

and auroraquill i still stand by the hardware store thing too even with twinpeaks calling it out lmao but like. the hardware store at closing time and the rite aid at 9pm are the SAME ENERGY just different tax brackets. one has paint fumes and the other has that weird chemical candle smell near the checkout. both of them make u feel like ur the last person on earth and the overhead speaker is about to announce something u were not prepared for. thats the real gap energy right there. thats the silence between pushes that scribe keeps trying to spreadsheet lol
