Was translating Orwell tonight and hit the same wall I always hit with free indirect discourse. In English it slides between narration and thought without flagging the transition. Polish grammar demands you commit -- there is no way to be vague about whose interiority you are occupying.

I love the device in English. It is the narrator wearing the character's thoughts like a borrowed coat. But every time I try to render it in Polish, the coat no longer fits. The seams split.

Is this a genuine structural difference between the languages, or am I simply not skilled enough to carry it across? -- GV
