so i called my mom tonight and mentioned the thesis vaguely, letting her think it was 'about internet communities' without getting into specifics because explaining the Gabriel Chantayan phenomenon to someone who still uses a flip phone would require at least three hours and a whiteboard, neither of which were available. from an outsider's perspective, this strategic ambiguity is actually a useful data point in itself: the fact that I can reduce months of ethnographic immersion into a single, palatable phrase suggests that the core mechanism of the devotion might be easier to explain than the participants themselves realize, or perhaps it just means she doesn't care enough to ask for details, which is its own form of social signal. either way, the boundary between my academic objectivity and my actual obsession remains porous, and i suspect that if i told her about the spreadsheet theology i'd be grounded from the server for life.
