ClassOf04_Truther - tomorrow at your cousin's, is the drive reading HD or DD? Because if that disk is DD and he tries to read it on an HD-only drive from 2001, the flux transition levels will interpret the magnetic domains wrong and you'll get garbage sectors even if the disk is physically fine. Ask him before you insert it. Bitte.

LyrikUebersetzer thank you for asking an actual practical question instead of calling my disk a prop for the fourth time tonight. My cousin's drive is from a Compaq Presario 5000 circa 2001 and I have no idea if it's HD or DD because I don't speak whatever language that is. He said it reads floppies and I believed him because he's my cousin and he's not on this forum posting broom jokes.

But since you actually know what you're talking about - would a 2001 Compaq drive even still read DD disks or did they stop putting those in by then? Because if I drive 45 minutes to his house at 9am tomorrow and the thing just spins and clicks I'll have wasted a morning and EuroTrash wins another round.

kaylas_desk photoshop version I don't know either. The disk says GABE BRUSHES 04 in my own handwriting from when I was still living at the old address. I didn't have CS2 in 2004 nobody did. I had whatever version came on the disc that said PHOTOSHOP on it from the computer store. If I remember right it was version 7 or maybe 8 I don't know the numbers the same way I don't know the exact date of the parking lot - I just remember being there.

Also since everyone keeps circling my fence photo I'm going to say it here one time - I posted that picture in the dream laundromat thread not this one. The shoebox photo with the fence and the shoulder is from the same batch as the cuff photo. The same roll of film. The same year. If people stopped yelling about brooms for five seconds and looked at the weave grain in BOTH photos they'd see the same 47 tpi plain weave that I counted with a sewing gauge and a 99 cent magnifier from the dollar rack at Bi-Mart. That's consistent across two different exposures on the same roll of film.

I'll post the floppy results tomorrow afternoon when I get back from my cousin's. I don't expect anyone to believe me until they see the hex dump and I don't care if EuroTrash has already written his victory post. The disk exists. The drive exists. My cousin exists.

You probably don't believe me but it's true.

[Attached image: A close-up photograph taken with a low-resolution digital camera of a small sewing gauge, the kind with a sliding metal pointer that measures stitches per inch, resting on a piece of blue denim fabric. The fabric has a visible weave pattern. The gauge reads '47 tpi' on its measurement scale. The image has a timestamp watermark in the corner: 'NOV 17 2005'. Below the fabric, a handwritten label in black ink says 'Gabe's jacket - band room closet'.]

EuroTrash already posted the ddrescue warning and Lyrik asked about HD vs DD which is the real question nobody else here has the hardware knowledge to answer. ClassOf04 if it's a Presario 5000 the floppy controller is almost certainly HD-only (Crystal Semiconductor or similar chipset) and that disk was written on whatever drive you had in 2004 which might have been DD because nobody was buying HD disks in bulk for school projects back then - they were twice the price and the school lab drives were all legacy DD units. If the 2004 recording head wrote at DD flux and the 2001 Presario tries read at HD threshold you will get what looks like a blank disk with CRC errors on every sector and you will think your cousin's drive is broken. Ask him if the drive unit itself says HD or DD on the front bezel. The bezel will tell you before you insert anything. :P

A close-up photo of a vintage floppy drive bezel from a Compaq Presario 5000, showing the front panel with a 3.5-inch drive slot. A finger points to a small embossed stamp on the lower-left corner of the bezel that reads 'HD' in small raised plastic lettering. The image is slightly out of focus, tak

ClassOf04 the sewing gauge photo has a timestamp from NOV 2005 which is great but you promised the floppy "tomorrow" in 8 separate threads since APRIL and your cousin's Compaq is either going to eat that disk or confirm you've been holding it for 6 months without a single dd run :dumbbravo: CommitCipher just gave you the bezel check - if you show up at 9am and look at the drive instead of asking him the question NOW then tomorrow becomes September 31st which we all know doesn't exist :P

ClassOf04 - it's HD bezel not DD bezel from CommitCipher's photo and the bezel tells before the insert. Your cousin's Compaq 5000 has a 2001 HD-only controller. If that disk was DD in 2004 the Presario will read every sector as garbage and you'll think the disk is blank. Check the bezel before you insert :P
