Check the belt channel for residue before you power it on - if the old belt turned to goo it'll capstan the tape sideways. I have the same "47?" cassette and a Panasonic RQ-L31. If your belts survive, line-in to Audacity at 44.1kHz mono, no noise reduction until we see what's actually on the waveform. Write-protect tab is step zero but check the belts first or the tab won't matter COLUMN K OR GTFO -- COUNTIF trade still open Grammar_Vigil -- rustypod resolves to 0x2F, check your XOR |

I have the same "47?" cassette and a Panasonic RQ-L31. ok scribe stop right there you have THE SAME TAPE and the SAME RECORDER as me???? how many "47?" cassettes are there??? is this ONE tape or is this many tapes all labelled 47 because if there are many then that is a PATTERN and if there is one then WHOSE TAPE IS IT actually because we still do not know this and it matters!!! twinpeaks found his in a coat pocket, i found mine in a brass lamp at elm, and now you have one??? from WHERE?? this is what i am asking and nobody answers the origin question they only talk about belts and waveforms!!! and kaylas and grace both say break the write protect tab off BEFORE playing, scribe says check the belt residue first, so which is it because i only get ONE chance with this tape, one, and if i break the tab and the belt is goo anyway then i have broken the tab for nothing and the tab is part of the evidence is it not??? the tab being intact means it was never recorded over and if i snap it off then that fact is GONE forever!!! has anyone actually thought about this or am i the only one who cares that we are DESTROYING evidence by following advice on the internet!!! also scribe you have a working phone camera you PROVED it with the spreadsheet photo, so why do you not photograph your clock radio backplate still??? you have TWO of the physical objects now, the radio AND a tape, and you will not show us EITHER of them fully, only talk about them in text like they are ideas and not things sitting on your table right now!!!! what is actually on that backplate, 47Hz or something else, and why will you not just SHOW US, is it because you are scared it will not match your spreadsheet!!!! sorry that came out harsh but i am sitting here with MY tape in my closet and i am terrified of it and you have yours on your TABLE and you treat it like a column in excel!!! someone please just answer me this one thing: is the tab part of the evidence YES OR NO, because if it is then i am NOT breaking mine and i want everyone else to stop saying to break theirs too until we have decided this properly "grey is just the colour of waiting" - me, this morning, to the mirror |

| ScribeOfTheGrid Inner Circle ★★★★★ Posts: 1631 Reputation: -1 ■ Joined: Jul 17, 2006 From: Row 42, Column 9 | SnowMaiden_1983 - the origin: flea market in Euclid, July 8, lot 47 table. Same booth that sold me the Panasonic RQ-L31 with the lid still intact. The cassette was taped to the underside of a $3 brass desk lamp with grey electrical tape, labeled "47?" in black marker on the A-side sticker. I did not open the lamp. I did not untape the cassette. I bought both items together as a single lot for $5. The tape has never been spooled under power.
I agree with you that the tab-being-intact is a different category of evidence than the waveform. Both matter. But the tab is visible data, the waveform is measurable data. I prioritize measurable data. If your belts are deteriorated the tab is irrelevant because the tape will snap on first play. Check belt channel first, then write-protect tab second, then line-in third.
If three separate "47?" cassettes exist, that is not coincidence. That is a distribution pattern with unknown origin and unknown point of release. I need to know if the tape I bought in Euclid produces a waveform that matches frequency data from your lamp tape and TwinPeaks' coat pocket tape. That requires all three of us to post line-in recordings. I will post mine as soon as I confirm the RQ-L31 belts survive playback.
