Board index » Two zero-pushes in 48 hours - double void or cheap NTP?| CommitCipher Inner Circle ★★★★★ Posts: 1478 Reputation: +13 ■■ Joined: May 27, 2006 From: In the diff of life | Let me lay out exactly what I found between the Oct 1 and Oct 2 pushes to rustypod because two zero-commit events in 48 hours is either the cleanest gap measurement on this board or it's a server clock nobody is maintaining.
I have been checking the timer offset question since FlameFury24's NIST comparison thread. I confirmed the rustypod push timer shows a fixed 47.0s skew against NIST stratum-1. Not drift. Not variance. Forty-seven seconds exactly, every check I've run since Sep 28. That is a pinned offset. The server clock is held at 47s behind UTC by something - whether it's a cron job someone wrote and forgot about, or Gabriel configured it that way and nobody has the nerve to ask which.
ElderProphet07's dataset from Sep 25 had the same number. Mean 47.02h, sigma 3.4h, 47th zero at 22:47:00 UTC dead on the mean. The man posted real timestamp data. I will not slander honest fieldwork.
BUT.
Two zero-pushes in 48 hours means either:
1. The gap methodology is real and these are deliberate "breath markers" between active cycles - a double void that maps to something in the commit graph we haven't been shown yet. If that's the case, EndTimesEli's 147-hour cycle count from the archived thread (topic 1402) puts us at the edge of a window. 147 hours since Sep 28 zero push would hit sometime around Oct 4-5. That is worth watching.
2. The NTP daemon on rustypod's host doesn't know it's 2006 and the cron that triggers the push script is running against a clock that nobody set for daylight saving or sync drift. In which case the two zero-pushes are infrastructure noise and the "double void" is a network appliance needing a kick.
I rigged a local NTP poll at 21:04 Sep 28 that matched my ls-tree verification on 8c3f9a4 - two blobs, no hidden_sheet.csv, no column K, no scripture to cite from the tree. The measurement was clean. The clock offset was 47s. The push today had the same skew.
BigRigBeliever clocked the Oct 1 midnight push at 47s gap on GPS sync. I trust that receipt. He posted the numbers.
What nobody has answered: if the timer offset is a fixed 47s, and the zero pushes are on schedule, and the NIST stratum-1 check keeps returning the same number, then who set it to 47 and when? That commit - if it exists - would be more revealing than the empty pushes themselves. A configuration change. A ntpd.conf edit. A startup script. If the clock was pinned at 47s deliberately, there is a commit for it somewhere in the rustypod history that is NOT a zero-push. It would be a real commit with real text. Find that commit and you find the hand that set the skew.
The working directory defense does not apply to init scripts. That is not mutable working directory theater. That is deployable configuration. It has a SHA. It has a parent. It can be verified the same way I verified 8c3f9a4's tree.
ElderProphet07 - your dataset was clean. Run the 7 vs 14 count at Day 37 and post it. The clock data is honest. The receipt on Day 37 is the missing witness.
TwinPeaks_59 - still waiting on your answer about which ruler you use for DAY 14. Double void (Sep 22) or 8c3f9a4 push. Asked in three threads now. Gap vs push methodology is not a philosophical question. It is a measurement question. Pick a ruler or admit you do not know what day it is. a3f2c8b verified across 6 nulls. curl the tree, not the event ID. |

| CommitCipher Inner Circle ★★★★★ Posts: 1478 Reputation: +13 ■■ Joined: May 27, 2006 From: In the diff of life | Two zero-pushes in 48 hours is not a double void until someone shows the reflog on BOTH pushes confirming both were empty. BigRigBeliever's CB static at 22:47:00 both nights is closer to evidence than any server log anyone's posted here because it's an independent sensor reading at the same timestamp on a different clock. NIST offset on a CB clock is unknown but the fact that it hit :47 on the dot both nights means either BigRig's CB is also pinned to 47s behind UTC or the event radiates at the wall-clock time regardless of which timezone's server reports it.
ElderProphet07 - you have the timestamp data. Run a cross-correlation between the rustypod push log and the NIST tick at 47s offset. If the push fires at exactly stratum-1 tick plus 47s every time, it's a cron job wound to a specific phase offset. If the push fires at some other signal (wall clock, manual keystroke, CB static), the jitter will show it. You know how to do this. You have the numbers. I am tired of asking. a3f2c8b verified across 6 nulls. curl the tree, not the event ID. |

That is a specific claim. Which NIST server hostname did you query, and how many samples per check? A stratum-1 pool round-robins across multiple reflectors. If you queried time.nist.gov that is a CNAME rotating across eight+ servers with different path latencies. A pinned 47.0s against a rotating pool is not a fixed offset - it is the pool average. I ask because this changes whether the offset is at the server or in your measurement path.
