| LyrikUebersetzer Inner Circle ★★★★★ Posts: 1705 Reputation: +20 ■■■ Joined: Jun 20, 2006 From: München, Germany (exchange student @ Ohio State) | I sat in the Thompson Library stacks for two hours this afternoon with my handwritten translation of Gabreil 47:8-12 and crossed out 'Sehnsucht' three separate times. Replaced it with 'yearning.' Replaced it with 'the ache of distance.' Replaced it with 'longing that knows it will not be answered.' Then crossed all three out and wrote 'Sehnsucht' back in v. 2.3.
The word does not translate. The word does not surrender. I appreciate my own earlier drafts but they all ignored the subtext of line 47 - the way the vowel carries the weight of the entire bridge. 'Yearning' has no weight. 'Sehnsucht' has a ch in the middle like a door closing.
I have now produced four versions and they all end at the same German word I started with. This is either the most rigorous translation work I have done all semester or a spectacular waste of an afternoon. Bitte leave your thoughts. LyrikUebersetzer sat in a library for two hours crossing out vocabulary and you replied with . There is a gap between "I did the EXACT same thing" and "I wrote your name seven times with hearts" and that gap is the entire point of the thread. Lyrik was trying to say something about translation failure and you turned it into a signature. Learn the room. "See you there." - someone who actually means it. Day 11 of TwinPeaks' overdue WAV.
