my sister (who is literally reading over my shoulder as i type this - hi sis) has this annoying habit of being right about things i swore she was wrong about. and i have to EAT MY WORDS every single time. so here's the top 5, ranked by how much it hurt my pride to admit she was right.
5 - THE CAR CLUNK
she said "that clunk is getting worse we should look at it"
i said "the car knows we're broke it's just taunting us"
two weeks later the alternator belt started making a sound that sounded like a dying cat and guess who had to pay for the tow truck :|
((you said "the car is fine stop worrying" and i said "the car is LYING to you" and you laughed. then we were on the side of the road for three hours. i have receipts.))
4 - THE GARLIC THING
i thought i was being sneaky adding extra garlic to the pasta. she caught me from across the kitchen. didn't even turn around. just said "i saw you" without looking.
i denied it. with my hand still holding the garlic press.
((you literally said "what garlic" while holding the garlic press. that's not denial that's a crime scene.))
3 - THE "LOW TIDE HYMN" AT 7AM
she blasted it. i complained. she said "you'll thank me later when it's stuck in your head all day in a good way"
i spent the whole afternoon humming it and she kept pausing at the door every time i hit the high note
((the high note you CAN'T hit. you tried though. it was cute.))
i hate that she was right. the song is good. that last note IS something.
2 - THE DRAWING FROM THE FOUR-YEAR-OLD
she came home holding a drawing a kid made at the nursery. it was a sun with little legs running away from a rain cloud.
i said "sis it's just a sun with legs it's not the whole arc of his third album"
she put it on the fridge.
tonight i looked at it while making tea and i swear i saw the whole album arc in it. the sun running from the rain. the acceptance of weather. the...
((the metaphor hit him. finally. i've been saying this for SIX HOURS.))
1 - THE "ABOUT HOPE OR GIVING UP QUIETLY" ARGUMENT
we were on the porch. blanket over both of us. arguing about the last verse of Fretless Hymnal.
i said "it's giving up. it's quiet resignation. he's tired."
she said "no. it's acceptance. he's at peace. there's a difference."
i argued for like forty minutes.
then i listened to it again tonight while she was making tea and... yeah okay fine it's acceptance. the way his voice settles on that last word. it's not giving up. it's laying down something heavy.

))i hate when she's right. especially about the poetry stuff. especially the poetry stuff about HIM. because she always is.
anyway that's the list. i'm not happy about any of this. but at least the sun with legs is on the fridge now and i don't hate looking at it
