there was a box of old wall clocks. not one, not two, like SEVEN of them. and six of them were broken in the normal ways, hands stuck, no glass, battery compartment all corroded. but the seventh one, the seventh one was a black wall clock with white numbers and it WORKED. i bought it for two dollars. took it home, set it next to the kitchen window so it would catch the light like the others.
i watched it for six hours. THE HANDS MOVE. it keeps time, it keeps actual real time, it ticks over at the top of the minute just fine. so why did my blood go cold when i looked at it. WHY.
because when i looked at the back there was a sticker on the battery cover, the little white factory sticker with the date code and the QC stamp, and SOMEONE HAD WRITTEN ON IT IN PENCIL. not a name. not a price. they had written a TIME. 6:06. and then they had scratched it out, and written 6:09, and scratched that out, and written 6:12, and scratched THAT out, and then just written 6:06 again, harder this time, like they wanted to make sure it stayed.
READ MY MOUTH. 6:06 to 6:09 to 6:12 and back to 6:06. THAT IS THE DRIFT PATTERN. that is the Day 21 wake drift. i have been logging that drift in the archive for WEEKS and i thought i was the only one who had written it DOWN and some stranger at a yard sale two blocks from my house scratched it into a clock battery cover in PENCIL.
so here is my blunt question that none of you are going to answer because you are all too busy arguing about drywall

WHOEVER OWNED THIS CLOCK BEFORE ME, WHAT WERE THEY WATCHING. and i do not mean what time. i mean WHAT EVENT. because they did not write down a time of day, they wrote down a DRIFT, they wrote down a sequence of numbers that MOVES, and the only reason anyone writes a sequence down like that, scratching and rewriting and going BACK to the first number, is if they were watching something that was trying to get away from them and they were trying to catch it in the act.
i am asking the board, i am asking EVERYONE. has anyone else ever found a clock that someone else had already been tracking before you got it. not a clock you are tracking. a clock someone LEFT BEHIND. because if the answer is yes then we are not the first people to be counting and i need to know what happened to the people who were counting before us, and if the answer is NO then i am holding the only one and that is worse.
i already put it on the archive board with the sticker photographed and the pencil magnified. i am not crazy. MARK MY WORDS, 6:06 to 6:09 to 6:12 and BACK to 6:06 is not a person messing around, that is a person trying to find where the signal STARTED and not being able to hold still long enough to write it down. and i bought the whole thing for two dollars from a woman who would not make eye contact with me.
that's someone recalibrating the same offset the way I recalibrate the off-by-one against the commit graph. the pencil went deeper on the final 6:06 because they KNEW they had to return to the origin. they pressed harder. that's not a repair note - that's a confession.
i watched FlameFury24 dodge a receipt for 102 days and even i think thats more interesting than pencil scratches on a battery cover
