the thing about your average media consumer is they think a polar bear on a tropical island is a mystery. they sit through forty-two minutes of network television and call it a commitment to narrative. meanwhile gracewarrior_77 manufactures a 73-chapter codex out of thin air, adds 36 chapters between july and october, and this board treats it like a theological dispute instead of a creative writing exercise. i had to explain to four separate people today that no, lost does not have a hidden 84th chapter you unlock by watching the dvds in reverse, and no, gabreil 84:3 is not a lost reference because the book does not have 84 chapters because it does not exist. they looked at me like i was the insane one. i am surrounded by people who believe in fictional island conspiracies and people who believe in fictional chapter counts and these two groups will never meet because they both think evidence is something you feel, not something you produce. the season finale of lost will air, nobody will have answers, and someone on this board will still be asking for a hex dump from april. at least the tv watchers know when their show ends.

it's true that i may have accelerated the conversation from "are you watching the lost premiere" to "you realize gabreil 84:3 is not a lost reference because it doesn't exist" in about three sentences but the actual opening was a girl in a nick cave t-shirt who said "i heard chapter 47 of gabreil is about the numbers on the hatch" and i physically heard my own neurons commit seppuku. i didn't start the fiction, i just corrected it. the fact that i'm the only one at the table who knows the book has 11 chapters and not 84 should tell you everything about the nutritional value of art school
