Was at a church rummage sale on High St this afternoon between lectures, not expecting anything, just killing time while the bus didn't come. And there it was - a Fowler's Modern English Usage, 1965 reprint, spine cracked, someone's name struck through with white-out on the inside cover. But the margins :D The previous owner has penciled in small corrections throughout - alternate prepositions, bracketed synonyms, one place where they crossed out "different to" and wrote "different from" with a little checkmark. I bought it for 47 cents. Obviously. But here's what has me sitting in the dark typing this instead of working on my Phonology problem set: page 47 (naturally) has a note in the same handwriting - not a usage note, but a single line that looks like a lyric fragment or a poem draft. "the door that was never locked / he walked through it anyway" - and then underneath, in smaller script, "v. 84:3?". I do not own a copy of the 84:3 field recordings that matches this orthography - the published transcriptions all have "through the open window" not "the door that was never locked" - but the line breaks are Gabriel's rhythm. The question mark is the previous owner's, not mine. I am not saying this is proof of anything. I am saying I now own a book that someone else annotated with the same reference system I use, thirty or forty years before I found it, and I do not know how to process that. Danke for listening. Footnote [1] to come when I have scanned the margin.

47 cents for a grammar book with a made-up citation :3 nice one, Grammar Vigil

A Fowler's Modern English Usage book open to page 47 with a penciled lyric fragment reading 'the door that was never locked / he walked through it anyway', faint white-out on the inside cover, beside a coin

day 112 and the drawer is STILL empty  talk to the drawer, sheriff :spitfire:

Lyrik you're one of the few people on this board doing actual field work instead of describing a broom you supposedly photographed but somehow never uploaded :D :D

"the door that was never locked / he walked through it anyway" with a question mark is MORE honest evidence than anything Grace or Elder or BackAgain has posted in their combined 200+ days of gaslighting :spitfire:

question tho - did the previous owner white-out their own name or someone ELSE'S name? cuz if its the latter u might have a chain of custody problem. if its the former then congrats u bought a 47-cent rabbit hole that actually has teeth :2cents: :peace:

"See you there." - someone who actually means it. Day 11 of TwinPeaks' overdue WAV. Get rekt.

Audi atque intellige. LyrikUebersetzer - your "47 cents" is a direct violation of §2.1 Currency Precision and an act of fiscal terrorism :dumb: :wtf: :hammer:

A close-up photo of a 1965 Fowler's Modern English Usage book open to page 47, showing the penciled margin note 'the door that was never locked / he walked through it anyway' with a red circle around the price tag reading '47¢'

^ this, flamefury's right - lyrik actually went to a rummage sale and bought something with her own hands and 47 cents, thats more than half this board has produced in the last month alone. the cross-ref with eurotrash's dream table from last week is sitting right there too... same era of handwriting maybe? same desk that flea market table was set up on? at the very least its SOMETHING to look at instead of another "the adapter works tomorrow" post lol

"the pencil date is on the inside cover" - GraceWarrior_77, day 82, still no photo :dumbbravo:

D00D DID U JUST SAY "DESCRIBING A BROOM U SUPPOSEDLY PHOTOGRAPHED BUT SOMEHOW NEVER UPLOADED" IN A THREAD WHERE U R ALSO DESCRIBING A SCREENSHOT U SUPPOSEDLY TOOK 106 DAYS AGO :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P

day 106 n still no paperclip icon in ANY of ur posts. not ONE. lyrik actually BOUGHT something with 47 cents n showed a picture of it. u typed "screenshot" into the text box n called it a day. :dumbbravo: :dumbbravo: :dumbbravo:

what file format is ur invisible screenshot anyway flamefury. jpeg? bmp? ms paint .psd? IMAGINARY FORMAT?? :spitfire: :spitfire: :spitfire:

DEERE u are a NATIONAL TREASURE :D :D that broom shelf edit is the most real thing posted on this board since... well since Lyrik's actual 47-cent purchase :P

FlameFury24 just posted ANOTHER "screenshot" in the chain email thread btw - still cropped, still no URL bar, still no paperclip icon on her end while she's telling ME to pick a lane  day 105 of "i have it i swear" and the file format changes every time she describes it :dumbbravo:

Lyrik - genuine question since you actually TOUCHED a physical object today - did the white-out feel recent or old? like flaking-off recent or "this has been covering someone's name since the Ford administration" old? cuz if FF24's screenshot archive ever materializes it'll probably be stored AS white-out on a wall somewhere :XD:

anyway im just here to say day 105 broom streak hits midnight and i already posted the tally photo this morning while watching pigeons fight over a pretzel. that's more documentation than FOUR claimed screenshot locations have produced :3 :peace:

day 112 and the drawer is STILL empty  talk to the drawer, sheriff :spitfire:

ok no im on lyrik's side here, she bought a real book with real 47 cents and showed the actual margin. flamefury get us ONE paperclip icon and i'll shut up about the whole thing forever :dumbbravo:

[sis whispering "the door that was never locked" is haunting btw like yeah it's a made-up citation but it LANDED. okay whatever. - J]

also formatking policing "47 cents" like the whole board isn't built on thrift store numbers... pick a lane man

BackAgain - white-out is flaking, post-Ford era but pre-2000 I think :P name underneath starts with "M." like Mary or Mark, can't get more off without damaging the page

thrift store ink is either really dry or really fresh and i can't tell anymore if it's actually cryptic handwriting or just poor penmanship :please:

just here for the weirdness...... not the light bulbs...... maybe both???

Lyrik did u check if the white-out name was the same handwriting as the margin notes or different? cuz if the same person who wrote "the door that was never locked" also white-outed their own name that means somethin but if it was a SECOND person tryin to erase the first owner it means somethin else entirely. nobody in this thread has answered that yet.

lyrik if the white-out is flaking and starts with "M." then congrats you got a pre-digital trail instead of a hotmail address, which is already more chain of custody than 90% of the "evidence" on this board :D

[bro says check if the "v. 84:3?" note was written in the SAME pencil as the grammar corrections or a DIFFERENT one - cuz if it's different ink then the citation was added later and the book was just a regular usage manual for 30 years before someone turned it into a signpost. sis says shut up it's clearly the same handwriting and the lyric is beautiful regardless of when it was written ((she's probably right but i want to be pedantic about it))]

formatking dropping §2.1 Currency Precision on a 47-cent thrift find is the funniest thing i've seen all week tho :dumbbravo: "fiscal terrorism" over a paperback at a church sale... mate your own signature is still using #C0FFEE instead of #C0FEE and you're out here citing imaginary bylaws

per iso 690 row 12 no equivalent reference exists for currency precision violations on thrift store margins - this is manual enforcement not bylaw  :please:
