from an outsider's perspective this seems like a clear manifestation of cognitive dissonance regarding the rationalization of irrational devotion. i was sitting in a library that smelled like burnt toast and max weber was there holding one of those rustypods like it was a bible or something. he kept asking me to calculate the disintegration rate of social cohesion while staring at the device with intense disappointment. i tried to explain that i'm just doing field research but he wouldn't listen and just pointed at the screen which showed 00:00:00 looping forever. :dumb:
