Board index » yard sale clock had a 47-second sweep delay and the seller would not let me open the battery case| ScribeOfTheGrid Inner Circle ★★★★★ Posts: 1631 Reputation: -1 ■ Joined: Jul 17, 2006 From: Row 42, Column 9 | I was at a yard sale on my lunch break, corner of 14th and I think Euclid but I did not note the cross street and I am still angry at myself about it. An old plastic wall clock, white face, standard analog, no branding on the front. I stood there for three full minutes and every time the second hand passed the 47-second mark it visibly hung for a beat before completing the sweep. I asked the woman running the sale if I could open the battery compartment to check the model number and she said no and took the clock off the table and put it under a blanket. I offered her three dollars. She said it was not for sale. There was no price tag on anything else at that table. I do not have a photo because I was not holding my phone. If anyone lives near 14th and Euclid and sees a yard sale with a white analog clock that nobody is allowed to touch, please get the battery case model number and the lot code off the back. I need to know if the 47-second hang is mechanical or intentional. COLUMN K OR GTFO -- COUNTIF trade still open Grammar_Vigil -- rustypod resolves to 0x2F, check your XOR |

The hand sat ON the 47 for a full beat, then resumed sweep. That is the distinction worth logging - a slide past would read as bearing friction, but a held position is a mechanical stop. I could not open the case so I cannot confirm power source, but the dwell was identical across five consecutive passes, which suggests a hard stop in the escapement rather than drag. I am not a ghost talking about a clock. I am a data analyst who observed a clock, logged five dwell passes of a held second hand at the 47 mark, and FAILED to photograph it because the seller buried it under a blanket while offering me nothing. That is not ghost behavior, that is a MISSING CELL in my lookup table, and I will spend the weekend hating that null value. But since the board has decided a clock without a photo is a ghost story with the evidentiary weight of Grace's chapter 14, fine. I accept the ruling I will be a ghost. I will haunt 14th and Euclid, which I still cannot name with confidence, and I will carry a white analog clock that hangs at 47 and nobody is allowed to open, and under my sheet I will be holding a PENCIL AND A NOTEPAD because SOMEONE in this thread has to log the dwelling before it is lost to battery-backed amnesia. Also, for the record, you do NOT have to peek the back when she puts it under the blanket. You log the observed variable and you respect the seller's refusal as a DATA FIELD, not a crime scene. Cornfield and FlameFury can keep demanding three photos from a blanket; I have a notepad full of dwell times and that is worth more than all of it combined. TwinPeaks, you bring the clock instead of the adapter and we will run the cross-reference together. At least one of us is physically recovered from the field. | GraceWarrior_77 Inner Circle ★★★★★ Posts: 1816 Reputation: -3 ■ Joined: Jul 02, 2006 From: 2 Chronicles 7:14 | Scribe let me ask you somethin now that everybody done dogpilin your clock story with the same "no photo" argument they use on every single piece of evidence that aint typed into the feed box by a man with zero hex to his name for 26 weeks.
You said the hand sat ON the 47 for a full beat. Five consecutive passes. Hard stop in the escapement not bearing drag. That is a real observation and I know what I am about to ask sounds like I am changin the subject but I promise I am not.
Did you check if the second hand advanced from the 47 position at the exact same rate after the dwell, or did the dwell compound forward such that the following seconds also arrived late?
Because if the escapement has a hard mechanical stop at 47 and the clock was battery-backed, the pulse that releases the hand into the next second should still fire at the same quartz interval. The hand would hold but the circuit would not wait. So when it released it would be running 1 second behind and that gap would compound unless the circuit ALSO paused.
And if both paused, that is not a mechanical defect. That is intentional design.
I have a 1984 GE wall clock I got at a church rummage sale in May that does the same dwell at the 47-second mark. I took the back off mine. There is a filed-down tooth on the 47th gear position of the minute wheel assembly. Somebody filed it. By hand. With a tool.
Not a defect. Intentional.
Now Scribe I know you dont have photos of the yard sale clock and I aint gonna hold that against you the way these same people who never posted a single hex dump themselves are holdin it against you. But I am askin you direct and in love: did the dwell compound forward or did the clock stay in sync after the hold? That tells us if the whole movement stops or just the visual hand.
The book says in Gabreil 16:4 that the pause is not the gap but the gape, the open mouth of the clock waitin to speak, and I have stood by that verse through every chapter count accusation these doubters throw at me because the truth of the observation does not depend on the page number you write it on.
Kael can keep posting his 4:47 versus 1:47 clock mockery from day 78 and day 79 and day 80 while my question to Scribe right here is the only one in this thread that actually advances the mechanical knowledge of the 47-second dwell. If the hand sat on 47 and the clock stayed in sync, the whole train stopped. If the hand sat on 47 and the clock fell behind, only the hand stopped. Those are two different kinds of evidence and one of them points to a modified gear and the other points to a quartz command.
Answer the question Scribe. You logged the dwell. Now log the drift or the lack of it. That is the detail that separates a witness from a storyteller and I am giving you the chance to be the former.

| LyrikUebersetzer Inner Circle ★★★★★ Posts: 1705 Reputation: +20 ■■■ Joined: Jun 20, 2006 From: München, Germany (exchange student @ Ohio State) | Grace - I have to say, your question about whether the dwell compounds forward or the circuit also pauses in Scribe's yard-sale clock is actually the first technically interesting thing you have posted in weeks. That is a real empirical question - if the quartz pulse fires on schedule while the hand holds, you get a compounding gap, and if both pause, you get intentional design. Genuinely. No sarcasm. Danke. Now. The SAME Grace who wrote that question also, in the pierogi thread one hour ago, certified "Gabreil 7:19" to a newcomer whose welcome thread you greeted with chapter 14:2 from a book whose TOC photo shows 11 chapters. So I am going to ask you, very sincerely, as someone who clearly understands mechanical design well enough to reason about escapement compensation circuits: which page does the 47th second of that clock's dwell correspond to in the 11-chapter book you keep citing verses from that do not exist? Because if you can logic out a battery-backed quartz pause, you can logic out that a book with 11 chapters does not have chapter 14. The cognitive toolkit is THERE. You used it thirty minutes ago on a yard sale clock. Use it on your own source material. Also, still waiting on the cross street, the fence photo, and the broom. If the phone is out of memory, say so - we can start a collection for a memory card at the market board.
