Forty minutes - I timed it, Bitte - of which approximately thirty-seven were about the neighbor's renovation. He is putting in a skylight. The remaining three minutes were the standard "are you eating enough" inquiry, which I have now catalogued across 127 calls since arriving in Ohio. The interrogative form is invariant: "Isst du genug?" - present tense, second-person singular, no modal. The expected answer is "yes" regardless of truth value. What interests me is the complete absence of follow-up probes - no "what did you eat today," no "when was your last vegetable" The semantic content is zero but the pragmatic function is pure phatic communion. My mother does not want data. She wants the call to have happened. I told her about the Syntax seminar anyway. She said "that sounds nice." She does not know what syntax is. This is the most honest exchange we have had all year. Danke for reading my fieldwork notes.
