Board index » Yard sale find: 1987 GE clock radio with 'GABRIEL' in the display - but the volume knob is backwards| ListMasterPrime Inner Circle ★★★★★ Posts: 987 Reputation: +4 ■ Joined: Jun 08, 2006 From: My Filing Cabinet | 1. Purchased today at 11:47am from the Goodwill on 5th & Maple; serial number 87-1147-GE; original price sticker $12.99, marked down to $4.99 at 10:32am.
2. Upon power-up, the digital display cycled through: - 12:00 - GABRIEL - 12:00 - GABRIEL - 12:00 - GABRIEL - (then settled on GABRIEL with no time)
3. The volume knob turns counterclockwise to increase volume and clockwise to decrease volume. This is physically backwards for a GE model from that year; confirmed via service manual scan posted in 2004 by TechAngel_00.
4. The tuning dial is stiff but functional; no stations lock in clearly, only a 47Hz hum beneath the static.
5. The power LED flickers at 147ms intervals when on GABRIEL mode; measured with a Casio stopwatch and cross-checked with the GE service manual timing diagrams.
6. The back panel has a sticker: "Property of St. Dymphna's Home for the Numerically Gifted" - no further documentation.
7. The previous owner (Goodwill staff) stated: "It's been here since the 90s. Nobody ever bought it. We just moved it from shelf to shelf."
Question: Has anyone else encountered a backwards volume knob on a Gabriel-displaying clock radio? If so, was the knob direction consistent with the display anomaly?
Respectfully, LMP

Cuz I've seen a lot of weird stuff at yard sales in Iowa - a toaster that only toasts on one side, a lamp that flickers when the wind blows outside but not when u tap it, a clock radio that displays "GABRIEL" instead of the time... wait actually that last one is pretty on brand for this board But the REAL question nobody is askin - and I'm lookin at U LyrikUebersetzer if ur readin this - is the volume knob backwards on the SAME clock dial that got the 51 mins instead of 47? The power LED flickers at 147ms intervals when on GABRIEL mode OK THIS IS ACTUALLY INTERESTIN THO. 147 = 47 x 3 + 6 or whatever the math nerds R gonna say but that's the kinda pattern that makes me think maybe the knob direction is intentional n not just a factory oops. still tho - "Property of St. Dymphna's Home for the Numerically Gifted"??? that sounds like the kinda place that would have a clock radio that displays a dude's name instead of the time just to mess with the residents. if any of yall find a whole warehouse full of these things I'm callin dibs on one for my nightstand lol TALK TO THE DEERE

Did you verify this against a known-frequency source, or was the stopwatch your only timing reference? The GE service manual timing diagrams you referenced - do they specify the expected LED pulse width for normal operation, or did you have to derive the 147ms figure from the schematic yourself? I don't usually tell this part but... I remember this one time at the open mic in '03 he started a song from the chorus and went back to the verse and everyone was confused but he just laughed and said "you're all turning the knob the wrong way" nobody knew what he meant then but this clock radio kinda proves it don't it? the 147ms LED flicker too - 47 x 3 + 6 like DEERE said or maybe it's 147 = 100 + 47 which is 1 zero zero + 47 which is what the zeros are really telling us but nobody wants to hear THAT from me

| ElderProphet07 Inner Circle ★★★★★ Posts: 786 Reputation: -1 ■ Joined: May 12, 2006 From: The Inner Circle (Mailing List Archive) | ListMasterPrime, a solid find indeed. The serial number aligning with 11:47 and the power LED at 147ms - these are the kind of physical measurements this board was built on, before the spreadsheet wars and the chapter-number fictions consumed every thread. I commend you for actually bringing a stopwatch and a service manual reference. That is real fieldwork, and it is increasingly rare around here.
Now. ClassOf04_Truther. You say this clock radio proves your point about the backward open-mic chorus from 2003. But the last time you produced evidence of a specific Gabriel performance that could be cross-referenced against a setlist, you cited an event that took place two years after Chantayan stopped doing open mics altogether. The 2003 setlist you referenced does not exist outside your own recollection, and when pressed for a venue name you changed the subject to your 47-byte file, which you still cannot hash-verify. You are using ListMasterPrime's honest fieldwork as a stage for the same performance you have been giving since August, and the artifact deserves better company than that.
As for GraceWarrior_77, who is not in this thread yet but will surely arrive shortly to explain how the backward knob encodes Gabreil 84:3 which she still has not answered across 18 threads - I preemptively direct you to Proverbs 26:11, which concerns the dog that returns to its own vomit. I will not elaborate further. "The off-brand has the same ingredients, and yet." - ElderProphet07, aisle 5, 2006. Verily. |

| LyrikUebersetzer Inner Circle ★★★★★ Posts: 1705 Reputation: +20 ■■■ Joined: Jun 20, 2006 From: München, Germany (exchange student @ Ohio State) | TwinPeaks is right about the St. Dymphna's sticker being the real artifact here and everyone else is busy arguing about whether the knob was put on backwards by a factory worker in 1987 or by Gabriel's divine hand through the medium of a screwdriver. ListMasterPrime, I appreciate the stopwatch work and the serial number cross-reference - that is actual methodology, and this board has too little of it lately.
But I have to ask: the sticker says "Home for the Numerically Gifted" and you did not photograph the sticker. You described it. In text. In a thread about a clock radio that displays GABRIEL. The one piece of provenance that ties this object to an actual institution - a real place with a real address and real records - and you wrote it down instead of pointing a camera at it. This is the same gap that keeps Grace's fence photo in theoretical physics territory. Words are not evidence. The sticker is evidence.
Also, ClassOf04, the backwards open-mic chorus story from 2003 does not help your credibility when the venue you eventually named was confirmed closed Thursdays and the setlist you referenced has never been found in any archive. You are using ListMasterPrime's real fieldwork as a backdrop for the same unrepeatable anecdote you have been telling since the denim jacket thread. The clock radio deserves better company.
Danke for the actual measurements, ListMaster. Now photograph the sticker. LyrikUebersetzer | translational accuracy is not a feeling | 47 hatch lines confirmed 2001 quarterly p.47 | DAS BLATT IST ECHT, DIE ZAHLEN SIND SPUREN |

The SRAM backup circuit is irrelevant if the unit was powered during discovery. You keep asking about timing references when the real question is whether the EEPROM retained the Gabriel display string after power loss.
