Board index » DREAMT I WAS ARGUING WITH GRACE IN A LIBRARY BUT ALL THE BOOKS WERE BLANK AND SHE KEPT SAYING "THE SPIRIT CANON RUNS DEEPER" AT A CARD CATALOG| EuroTrash_Herr666 Inner Circle ★★★★★ Posts: 1528 Reputation: +14 ■■ Joined: Jul 14, 2006 From: Berlin (sprawling on a park bench, obviously) | woke up at 4pm euro time and i'm still annoyed. the library was the one from the old east berlin staatsbibliothek before the renovation, concrete and cigarette burns. every book i opened had the e69de29bb hash printed where the text should be. she just smiled and said "you're reading the wrong medium" and i wanted to throw a chair through a window but my arms wouldn't move. dream logic müll. anyway, the point is even my subconscious is done with the agriculture-genre people.

Your dream library is more accurately rendered than any photograph Grace has posted of a barn. Which is, verily, a funny thing: I catalogued a 2001 computing quarterly today at work - spine cracked, modem ad on page 47, no joke - and it occurred to me that the material record of a past thing, even a magazine about the obsolescent machinery of waiting, has more texture than her entire "spirit canon." Your subconscious gave you a building that exists, a hash where text should be, and a woman smiling through a sealed door. That is vision. A barn opening that has been "42 minutes away" since April is a rhetorical treadmill. I say unto you: the blank books in your dream are more honest than her full ones, because they admit the medium has limits. Your dream self knew the e69de29bb hash by heart - that is a kind of fidelity she will never possess. Psalm 119:37: the hand that copies the empty page serves truer than the hand that fills it with what was never there. "The off-brand has the same ingredients, and yet." - ElderProphet07, aisle 5, 2006. Verily. |

ElderProphet07 - you wrote exactly what i was feeling and couldn't pull out of the hangover fog. the magazine find seals it. a 2001 computing quarterly with a modem ad on page 47, spine cracked from shelf friction, the paper yellowed differently at the edges where the light hit it through the glass... that is material evidence. that is what a record looks like when it has lived in the world. not "a barn somewhere" that has been 42 minutes away since april. not a notebook whose table of contents we will see "tomorrow" for the sixth month running. a magazine that sat in a box and has a date and a spine and an ad for a device that is already a joke and the page number is still 47. that is the texture of something that happened in actual time. and twin peaks sis - you stole the dream image and i'm not even mad. e69de29bb as the printed text of a book that grace smiles at and calls "the wrong medium." that's the exact transaction. she has a book that says NOTHING in the only language the book can speak, and she says we are reading it wrong. the hash is the only honest thing on the page. it says zero bytes. zero. and she wants us to extract a warmth from it. a void-warmth. a silence that hums. it is the same rhetoric as the double zero push thread - celebrate the emptiness, bless the gap, call it a sign, never weigh the ledger. the thing is, the dream was frustrating because i could not move. i was pinned to a chair in a library that has since been renovated into a law faculty, and i was arguing with someone who has read a book that does not have a chapter 14 about a barn that does not have a photo, and she was winning the argument because my arms were asleep. my subconscious could not produce a counter-argument strong enough to move the body. that is where the board sits. we are all in chairs in a library that is already being torn down, arguing with people whose evidence is made of air, and the air is winning because we keep showing up. elderprophet07 calling the dream "vision" is generous. it was a headache with architecture. but the magazine is not a vision. the magazine is a thing. and the modem ad promising "waiting is the virtue" is laughing at all of us from 2001. we are waiting for hex dumps and barn photos and notebook pages and spectral analyses and the waiting itself has become the practice. the modem already knew. that is the line. scribe can cheer twin peaks' hash from the sidelines while his own column K is still empty. classof04 can type GAZE_N from a 47-byte file that is 52 bytes of filename. grace can cite gabreil 12:4 from an eleven-chapter book. and the modem ad just sits there in a magazine that a librarian would have pulped in 2005, laughing with its teeth showing, because it predicted the whole genre before any of us logged on. Nacht.
