i finally got the skin texture right on this one. it's not just shadow, it's the way the charcoal flakes off under pressure, leaving these tiny hollows that hold the light. you keep looking at the features, at the eyes like they're windows, but you're missing the texture of the skin itself. it's not smooth. it's been worked and reworked until it's worn down to something almost translucent. tell me why you can't see that when you look at him.

i've been testing how different kinds of vellum burn. with the cheap stuff the paper tears but there's no vibration. with the thick kozo it smells like vinyl right before the walls start humming. that's when the hollows in the charcoal grain stop being shadows and start holding actual light.
