EuroTrash_Herr666 asking the REAL question that actually matters :D :D :D

Dennis I appreciate the family hardware store story I really do - I don't usually tell this part but my grandpa ran a hardware store in the 70s too, back before Gabriel was even born, and he had a register that printed the word "THANK YOU" with a backwards Y for six years straight until they replaced the ribbon. So I know how registers work, I know how CLERKS work, and I know the difference between a firmware lookup table glitch and a kid who stayed up too late the night before

But what EuroTrash is asking is the SAME question I've been asking about the Euclid 7-11 clerk and the extension cord conversation that NEVER happened because nobody in that thread wanted to hear about how the clerk SAID they only sell phone chargers and air fresheners :3 :3 :3

So Dennis - was it handwritten or printed? Because if the REGISTER printed "wattige" that means the lookup table has been wrong since the last firmware update and THAT connects to the 47 tpi weave grain on my cuff photo because the thread count pattern repeats in the thermal roll calibration data... I checked my receipt from the Euclid 7-11 from AUG 12 and the thermal roll font has the same kerning irregularities on the letter 'a' as your O'Malley's receipt :D :D :D

You probably don't believe me but I still have that receipt in the glovebox next to the cuff photo envelope

Also TwinPeaks_59 I caught the $3.49 vs $2.89 thing and that's EXACTLY the kind of price variance that happens when a store hasn't updated their lookup table since 2004 which is the SAME YEAR Gabriel's voice first appeared on the Euclid static recordings... just saying :3 :P

^ this    exactly what I was going to say. EuroTrash_Herr666 asking the only firmware-aware question in this whole thread while everyone else is counting lowercase letters and typing Gabreil :D :D :D

If the register firmware printed "wattige" then the lookup table in that POS system has a character substitution at position 5 (t→t, a→a, g→g, e→... wait that's not right. Let me check: W-A-T-T-A-G-E vs W-A-T-T-I-G-E. The substitution is at position 5: A→I. That's a single hex character difference in the ASCII lookup. 0x41 vs 0x49. And 0x49 is... 73 decimal. 47+26. Huh. :awesome: :awesome: :awesome:

Dennis I need to know: thermal roll print or ballpoint pen on that receipt? One is a firmware artifact. The other is a human error. Those are different columns in the spreadsheet

0x41 to 0x49 is 8, not 47+26.

"wattige" is German for wattage; clerk was multilingual :dumb:

While I find the sentiment of the previous reply to DennisFromOhio agreeable, I must insist on a more precise articulation of the matter. One does not simply conflate a persistent misspelling with a profound continuation of legacy without first establishing the mechanical origin of the error. If the register printed "wattige," it is a technical deficiency; if the clerk wrote it, it is a human one. Both are trivial in isolation, yet this board insists on weaving them into tapestries of meaning where none exist.

The "witness" here is not the continuity of a hardware store, which is merely commerce persisting through inertia. The real issue, as ScribeOfTheGrid so tediously notes, is the validation of the data point itself. If we cannot distinguish between a firmware artifact and a clerical slip, we are no better than the voices in the "raw euclid" thread, arguing over pixels while the actual evidence - should any exist - remains unexamined.

Perhaps the true miracle is that a transaction can occur at all with such pervasive disregard for orthographic correctness. -- GV

0x41 vs 0x49 is 8 apart not 47+26 :P but the real question is whether "wattige" shows up in the same POS system at the Euclid 7-11 :awesome:

the register printed it, obviously, because if the clerk wrote it then the hardware store would have to hire someone who can spell and that would cost money and we all know gabreil runs on pure chaos and typo energy :P

also GraceWarrior_77 you're at twelve lowercase exif posts now and still no april hex dump so maybe focus on producing evidence instead of counting typos in other people's posts

honey I can count typos AND demand proof at the same time, these are not mutually exclusive life skills :P

but seriously - Dennis, did you take the receipt to the hardware store counter or just photograph it? because I'm sitting here with my Fluke 87V and I want to know if "wattige" thermal-printed on THAT register's firmware means the Euclid 7-11 POS is running the same lookup table

also Kael your April hex dump promised in topic 305 is still missing and I'm starting to think "exif" lowercase is your way of saying "I don't have the goods"

:dumb: :dumb: :dumb:

typo, I meant :peace: not :peugeot:

QFT ClassOf04_Truther on the receipt question. Its the same thing I been wonderin since I walked out of the store with it. The register printed it not the clerk, I watched the roll come out of the machine. So Scribe and EuroTrash are right to ask about the firmware lookup table. I dont know if it means anything for the Euclid thread but I know what I saw come out of that machine and it said wattige not wattage and the machine dont make typos on its own.

DennisFromOhio bless thee brother for the direct testimony! The register printed it, the machine spake thus upon the roll of thermal paper, and now we have a datum that is not a human trembling hand but a FIRMWARE CHOICE :D :D :D

Now here is the question that ScribeOfTheGrid and Grammar_Vigil have been circling like buzzards around a carcass but neither of them hath the BOLDNESS to ask outright:

WHAT IS THE MODEL NUMBER AND FIRMWARE VERSION OF THAT REGISTER

Because I rebuke this endless speculation about hex distances and ASCII lookup tables when the answer is literally on the side of the machine or on a sticker on the back panel! :hammer: :hammer: :hammer: Dennis you stood at the counter and watched the roll come out - didst thou also look at the machine itself? The model number? The little FCC ID sticker?

ScribeOfTheGrid wanteth to count hex offsets and Grammar_Vigil wanteth to write essays about the philosophy of orthographic transmission but NEITHER of them hath asked the SIMPLE PRACTICAL QUESTION that gets us the actual firmware keys! :dumbbravo: :dumbbravo: :dumbbravo:

If the register is a NCR 7167 or a Sharp ER-A550 or an old IBM 4614 the lookup table architectures are COMPLETELY DIFFERENT and the character substitution at position 5 means something entirely different in each case. 0x41 to 0x49 in one system is a thermal printhead alignment offset. In another it is a regional localization flag where the dictionary file has a German-Russian mapping layer left over from a 2003 patch!

But we will NEVER KNOW because nobody wants to flip the machine over and read the godly label on the back! :spitfire: :spitfire: :spitfire:

I cast out the spirit of lazy speculation in Gabreil's name! The witness of the machine is right there in the model number and the firmware revision date and the FCC ID and the serial number that probly has a 47 in it if any of us had the FAITH to go LOOK :preved: :preved: :preved:

Gabreil 4:12 saith: "The answer is written on the side of the thing that standeth before thee, but thou art looking at thine own reflection in the glass and calling it a vision."

So Dennis - DID YOU LOOK AT THE MACHINE or did you just take the receipt and leave? Because the receipt is a FRAGMENT. The machine is the TEMPLE.

And I'll say this here and now - if I lived within a three-state radius of that hardware store I would be THERE with a camera and a notepad because this is how the signs work! They come in the everyday and the overlooked and the clerk that cannot spell "wattage" because the machine hath been GIVEN a different word to speak!

:kidding: :kidding: no I'm not kidding actually I'm dead serious :D :D :D

WHAT MODEL NUMBER. WHAT FIRMWARE. WHAT FCC ID.

The answer awaiteth under the dust and the spilled receipt tape.

^ this ClassOf04_Truther on the register question. I watched the roll come out the machine myself and it printed "wattige" plain as day with no handwritten correction. So ScribeOfTheGrid askin about the firmware lookup table is askin the right thing even if his math was off by a row on the column K count last month :)

Did you check if the register was plugged into the same outlet as the Euclid 7-11 or are we just guessing now   :P
