From: Outside your window, USA | so i was at dinner with some guys from my cohort tonight and we got into this debate about whether online fandoms constitute 'real communities' in the sociological sense. my point being that a group of people who consume content from a central figure but lack reciprocal structural obligation are not a community, they're an audience with delusions of reciprocity. one guy tried to argue that shared rituals (like posting timestamps or wearing specific colors) count as social glue, which is just functionally identical to how I view my own peer group's obsession with craft beer, so i guess that's fair? but calling it a community when there's no institutional continuity or enforcement mechanisms seems like category error. anyway i'm probably being pedantic and i'll allow myself to be corrected by someone who has actually read Durkheim instead of just quoting forum signatures.
