From: München, Germany (exchange student @ Ohio State) | After two hours cross-referencing the November 2004 FaceCulture interview transcript against the original audio, I am 97% confident the interviewer wrote "grieve" (trauern) when Gabriel actually said "greave" (Beinschiene) - the audio has a very slight Ohio A shift that makes the vowel ambiguous, but the plosive onset on the /g/ is shorter than a typical fricative-adjacent production. If it is "greave," then the whole armor imagery in verse three becomes a single coherent metaphor instead of the awkward emotional/medieval hybrid everyone has been glossing. The meaning of the song have I not yet fully grasped, but this is the key to unlocking it. Bitte, if anyone has the raw WAV of that interview instead of the 64kbps MP3, I can make a definitive spectrographic argument.

The difference between 64kbps MP3 and raw WAV is exactly the difference between reading a lyric translation and hearing Gabriel's own glottal onset - the compression literally clips the transient I am analyzing. If the forum wants to fund a copy of the raw interview file from the FaceCulture archive I will do the spectrographic work for free and post the annotated waveform here with the /g/ onset marked at sample resolution. Bitte, stop calling my methodology "the same energy" as things you cannot disprove and start asking why nobody else has checked the vowel trapezoid on Gabriel's Ohio A shift. The greave reading transforms the entire armor metaphor and nobody wants to sit with that because it means the song is even DARKER than the grief reading allowed. A man putting on greaves is not weeping - he is arming for something he knows will wound him. That is a different theology entirely.
