So I finally caved and bought the balancing kit for my bedroom fan after months of it sounding like it's about to ascend to the next realm every time I turn it on - and get this, the instruction manual says "apply clip to the blade that needs balancing" like THAT tells me ANYTHING. Which blade?? HOW do I know?? There's no column K thermal decay offset for Wobbling Fan Alignment, Gabriel help me. Anyway I have it laid out on my floor next to a tape measure and a Sonic drink cup and I'm ready to SCIENCE this thing but honestly if someone on here has balanced a ceiling fan before I'm accepting prayers and/or diagrams. This is a legitimate off-topic thread about the physics of household appliances and I will NOT have it moved to support, MODS.

A blurry camera phone photo of a ceiling fan balancing kit spread out on a beige carpet floor next to a Sonic drive-in cup. The kit includes small metal clips, a plastic case, and a folded instruction manual that looks aggressively unhelpful.

My broom has 47±12 strands, thanks LMP :dumbbravo:  Sakura day 31 - still no hex dump :deadhorse:

BackAgainLikeBadHair ^ this is the most honest post I've read all day - the instruction manual never tells you WHICH blade, Gabriel help us all   my fan's been doing the same thing since June and I just live under it like it's a test of faith :D :D you're doing the LORD'S WORK with that Sonic cup, don't let anyone tell you different. nobody else in the basement is asking the real questions.

honey, the balancing clip goes on the BOTTOM of each blade one at a time while the fan is running on LOW speed, and you watch which direction it wobbles toward - that's the heavy side, so you clip it about 6 inches out from the center on the blade that's WON'T... wait, no, sweetheart, you clip it on the OPPOSITE blade, the one that's HIGHEST in its arc, because that's the LIGHT side and the clip adds weight to bring it back down into balance.

if that Sonic cup is your only measurement tool you're gonna have a rough time but the clip method works - run it, watch the wobble, move the clip to the blade at top dead center, run again. repeat until it stops trying to take off like it's witnessing something :P :P

(I've been balancing fans since before they had balancing kits - your grandmother's ceiling fan in 1987 was louder than most teenagers, so trust me on this)

BackAgainLikeBadHair Scribe is in the teachings thread explaining DST drift correction on a fan blade that doesn't exist and you're out here with a REAL wobble problem and a Sonic cup. You're doing empirical science. HE'S doing interpretive dance.

If the clip method doesn't work, try what I did with my GE microwave return this morning - put it on LOW and threaten to take it back to the store. Fixed the vibration immediately. :D :D :cheeky:

For real tho MamaBear's got the right method. Clip to top dead center. Repeat. Don't overthink it or you'll end up like Scribe citing submodules for a wobble that needs a washer :dumbbravo:

MamaBear knows what she's doing and BACK AGAIN is the only one here actually listening to her instead of arguing about firmware versions that don't matter. This is EXACTLY what I've been saying for MONTHS. You want proof of the Going Quiet? Watch the ceiling fan. When it stops wobbling that's when you know. When it goes silent and steady and the blades blur into one circle that's the WHOLE SIGNAL.

EVERYONE else on this board is sitting around demanding hex dumps and voice recordings while the fans are trying to tell us something. BackAgain got the balancing kit. MamaBear gave the method. That's community. That's how you PREPARE. Not with calibration data from a Fluke 87V that's running firmware from 2004 :deadhorse:

MamaBear is out here balancing ceiling fans with a Sonic cup and I'm over here still waiting for someone to volunteer a 16awg extension cord for EUCLID and it's been MONTHS omg!!! :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:    :dumb: :dumb:

MamaBear you're describing the exact opposite of how mechanical balancing works - the clip goes on the heavy side (bottom dead center) to counteract the asymmetry, not the light side. You're adding weight where the mass already is, which amplifies the vibration rather than neutralizing it. This isn't mysticism, it's basic static balance theory. From an outsider's perspective this is just physics.

LurkingObserver42 there is a difference between a crack in the plaster and a message written in the settling, and the gap is not in the physics but in the witness :3 you can measure the frequency but you cannot quantify the way it vibrates against the ribs when you are waiting for a sign that refuses to arrive on a schedule

next chapter: the silence everyone agrees to call proof. (*author's note*: the charcoal smell is the bridge and none of you are crossing it)

BackAgainLikeBadHair I don't usually tell this part but... the summer before everything changed, I had a ceiling fan in my bedroom that hummed at exactly the same pitch as Gabriel's voice when he was trying not to laugh at something stupid. I'd lie in bed and hear that same note and just... know he was thinking about me too. You probably don't believe me but it's true. The balancing kit is a sign, I swear it  The top dead center method MamaBear described - that's where the weight settles, that's where the hum stops sounding like a question and starts sounding like an answer. You're on the right path with that Sonic cup, trust me.

EndTimesEli ^ this about the fans telling us something  I've been saying the same thing about the weave grain on my 2003 hoodie cuff - 47 threads per inch, same number as the row, same number as the column, and the loose thread on the left side lines up at the same angle as the Euclid junction box cord in Sakura's first photo before she started laundering evidence. Scribe can ignore it in the teachings thread all he wants but the thread count doesn't need his citation, it just sits there in the sunlight waiting for someone to count it :3

A close-up photograph of a worn gray hoodie cuff lying on a wooden porch railing in late afternoon sunlight. The weave is clearly visible - you can count 47 threads per inch by eye. A silver sewing needle rests next to the fabric for scale. A yellow sticky note in the corner has handwriting that say

LurkingObserver42 you're sitting here explaining static balance theory to BackAgainLikeBadHair while she's holding a Sonic cup and you're holding a wikipedia tab. If you had ACTUALLY balanced a fan this decade you'd know MamaBear's method works because the clip slides toward the heavy side once the fan spins and finds it itself. Theory is fine. Empirical result is better. MamaBear's been doing this since 1987. You've been reading about it since you clicked the link.
