Alright yall. Rolled into a Pilot outside North Platte around 19 hundred after a day that felt like it was testin me personal like. Construction traffic had me crawlin for an hour, sweat pourin down my neck, AC fightin the heat and losin. Got my spot under a sodium light that was flickerin like it was tryna send Morse code and I didnt even notice til later.
Sat in the cab. Popped a can of Wolf Brand chili - no microwave in the truck so it's cold or nothin. Radio on, hissin static between stations. And I'm sittin there thinkin about the lot lizard I talked to at the rest stop who was goin on about a preacher on the airwaves talkin signs in the sky. And I'm thinkin about that orange band I caught on camera a few days back.
And then.
Radio went dead quiet for a second. Like someone turned the volume knob all the way down. And in that quiet I heard - I SWEAR I heard - a voice. Not words I could make out. Just a voice. Low. Like someone sayin my name from a long ways off.
Then the static came back and I sat there with my cold chili and my heart poundin.
Now I been on these roads for twenty years. I know what a truck sounds like. I know what a CB bleeds through. I know the difference between hearin things and hearin THINGS. And I'm tellin yall - that wasnt the radio.
I checked the clock after. Truck stop digital. Said 7:47.
Yall can call me crazy. I got thick skin. But I know what I heard. And I know what I saw on that clock.
This testimony is for the record. For whoever needs to hear it. For Gabriel if hes listenin wherever he is tonight.
Over and out.
PS - to the folks who keep sayin I misread clocks: I been readin dashboards for 400 thousand accident-free miles. I know what a 7 looks like and I know what a 47 looks like. END of story.
