5amYou woke up stiff in the cab at Mile Marker 267 with the heater rattling and a thermos gone cold overnight.Cold coffee again. Rig's rattlin like an old man's chest. Still, better than no rig at all. Breaker breaker, mornin's here whether I like it or not.
7amYou checked the tire pressure and the patched hydraulic line before easing back onto I-80 into the gray morning traffic.Line's holdin. Held all week, might hold forever if the Man Upstairs is feelin generous. 10-4 on that, old girl, don't quit on me now.
10amYou stopped at a truck stop outside Lincoln for fuel and grabbed a burnt gas station burrito for breakfast.Burrito tastes like the inside of a tire but a man's gotta eat. Saw a fella at the pump had a cross tattoo just like Gabriel talks about. Sign? Maybe. Everything's a sign if you squint right.
1pmYou idled for forty minutes behind a jackknifed trailer near Omaha, listening to static on the CB and eating a cold ham sandwich.Nothin but static out there today. Lonesome kinda quiet. Wish somebody'd break in and say somethin, anythin. Copy that, silence, I hear ya loud and clear.
4pmYou passed a church marquee near Council Bluffs that read 'THE END IS NEAR - REPENT' in crooked plastic letters. Now THAT there is a sightin if I ever seen one. Gabriel'd probably laugh at me sayin so but I felt it in my chest, I swear it. Somethin's linin up out here, I can feel it in my bones.
8pmYou parked for the night at a dim lot east of Des Moines, ate cold chili from a can, and watched the stars come out through

6amYou woke up in the cab at a rest stop outside North Platte with frost on the inside of the windshield and your breath fogging the air.COLD as a witch's you-know-what out here. Breaker breaker, mornin' comin in cold and gray, but she's runnin, that's all that matters.
8amYou fueled up, grabbed a lukewarm coffee and a stale donut from the pump station, and checked the patched hydraulic line before rolling out.Line's holdin, thank the good Lord and a roll of duct tape. 10-4 on the coffee bein garbage but hot garbage still counts.
12pmYou ate a bologna sandwich hunched over the wheel while idling in a long line of trucks waiting for a weigh station to clear an accident up ahead.Traffic backed up like molasses. Some fool jackknifed a flatbed up yonder they say. Poor devil. Hope he's ok, over.
3pmYou passed a faded billboard for a revival tent meeting outside Ogallala and swore the preacher's face looked just like Gabriel's from a certain angle. Now hold on now. HOLD ON. That there is a sign if I ever seen one. Gabriel out here watchin over the westbound lanes. Breaker breaker, got myself a real sightin, gonna tell the boys tonight.
7pmYou pulled into a truck stop diner near the Nebraska-Wyoming line and ate a chicken fried steak alone at the counter, listening to two waitresses argue about a broken ice machine.Company'd be nice but the steak's decent enough. Man can get used to eatin alone I guess. Still miss havin somebody to talk to that ain't the CB.
10pmYou parked for the night in a dim lot lit by one buzzing sodium lamp, smoked your last cigarette of the day, and stared up at a sky th

5amYou woke up cold in the cab with your neck locked sideways from sleeping against the window, and cracked your back until it popped three times.Lord almighty. Sleepin in this rig gettin worse on these old bones every year. Body's a rusted hinge and I'm the WD-40 that ran out.
7amYou gassed up at the same truck stop near Mile Marker 267 and bought a hot dog that had clearly been spinning since yesterday, plus a new pack of smokes.Breaker breaker. That hot dog look like it seen some things. Gonna eat it anyway cuz a man's gotta eat and I ain't proud.
9amYou pulled the rig back onto I-80 westbound, radio crackling static until you found a country station out of Lincoln, and settled into the long gray stretch of road.10-4 good buddy, back on the highway. Just me n the hum of these tires n whatever that fella upstairs got planned for me today. Feel like somethin's comin. Always do out here.
12pmYou stopped for lunch at a rest area, ate a sad turkey sandwich you'd made in the cab that morning, and watched a family of five pile out of a minivan looking exhausted.Poor souls. Least I ain't got five kids screamin at me bout needin the bathroom. Just me n the road n the quiet. Sometimes the quiet's a friend, sometimes it's a real mean SOB.
3pmYou had to pull over for twenty minutes when a hydraulic line started leaking fluid, cussed up a storm, and patched it enough to limp to the next service station.DAGGONE IT. This truck's fallin apart same as me. Held together with duct tape n prayer n whatever's left in the tank. Copy that, universe, message received, you tryin to slow me down today.
7pmYou parked for the night at a

5amYou woke before the sun, stiff as a rusted hinge, and put on a pot of gas-station coffee that tasted like scorched tires.MORNIN world. Body creakin like an old trailer hitch but the coffee's hot so that's a win. Gonna make Mile 267 by breakfast, copy that.
9amYou crossed into Nebraska proper, tires humming steady, and passed a billboard for a church revival that had a guy on it who looked just a little bit like Gabriel if you squinted. Now hold on. HOLD ON. That fella on the billboard, that jawline, that look in his eye - that ain't no coincidence. Breaker breaker, another sightin', I swear it. The road's talkin to me today.
1pmYou pulled into a truck stop diner near Mile Marker 267, ordered the meatloaf special, and sat alone at the counter listening to two truckers argue about the Bears game.Meatloaf's dry as a Nevada highway but a hot meal's a hot meal. Wish somebody'd sit with me and talk about somethin that matters, not just football. Feelin that lonesome static in my chest again.
4pmYou got a flat on the rear trailer axle and spent an hour sweating in the gravel shoulder wrestling the spare on while semis roared past close enough to rock the cab.10-4 on the worst kinda luck. Hands shakin, back screamin, but I ain't stranded, I ain't beat. This ol truck and me, we been through worse. SMALL VICTORY when that tire finally seated right.
7pmYou watched the sky go orange and purple over the flatlands while you ate a gas station burrito leaning against the fender, letting the engine cool and tick.Sky's puttin on a show tonight, like it knows somethin I don't. Feels like a message. Wish I had somebody ridin shotgun to see it with me.

6amYou woke up stiff in the sleeper cab, joints cracking like old tree branches, and sat there a minute just listening to the wind hit the trailer.Lord almighty. Body feels like it got run over by itself. Gonna need coffee strong enough to strip paint this mornin.
8amYou pulled into a rest stop outside Ogallala, splashed water on your face in the cracked bathroom mirror, and bought a stale donut from the vending machine because it was that or nothin.Breakfast of champions right here. Powdered sugar and regret. Still better than the diner coffee that tastes like it been recycled since Reagan.
11amYou drove through a stretch of construction that had traffic backed up for two miles, engine idling hot, and watched a hawk circle over the median like it owned the place. That hawk's been up there a good while now. Circlin like he's waitin on somethin. Feels like a sign but I ain't sure of what yet. Gabriel'd probably say it means somethin bigger.
2pmYou stopped at a truck stop in North Platte, filled up the tank, and got into a long talk with another driver about a load gone bad near Salt Lake.Good to hear another voice that ain't static. Man's haulin lumber, says the roads out west are a mess. Made me miss the CB chatter, real bad. Feels quiet out here without the boys talkin.
5pmYou caught the sunset turning the sky the color of a bruise over the flatlands, pulled onto the shoulder just to watch it, engine ticking as it cooled. Now THAT right there. That's a paintin no man could make. Feels holy almost. Like the sky's tryin to tell me somethin, same as that barn sign yesterday.
9pmYou parked for the night at a rest area past Kimball, radio hissing low, and ate cold beans

5amYou woke up cold in the cab at Mile Marker 267, the windows fogged up like the whole world was breathing on em, and cranked the heater before your feet touched the floor.Lord it's cold. 267, same spot as always feel like. Coffee first, questions later. Breaker breaker, mornin' to whoever's out there. Over and out for now, gotta get movin'.
8amYou fueled up at the truck stop, paid cash, and traded a few words with the attendant about the Bears game before climbing back into the cab.Fella didn't know squat about the Bears but that's alright, nice to hear a voice ain't crackly static. 10-4 on the fuel, tank's FULL, wallet ain't. Rollin' out.
11amYou drove three straight hours through flat gray Nebraska nothing, CB hissing empty except for one trucker talking about a jackknifed rig near Kearney.Jackknife up ahead, copy that, gonna take the long way round. Roads is lonesome today. Wish somebody'd talk to me 'sides the static. Feels like the whole highway holdin' its breath.
1pmYou pulled off for lunch at a diner with a busted neon sign, ate a chicken fried steak that was mostly gravy, and left a bigger tip than you could afford.Gravy so thick coulda spackled a wall with it but dang if it wasn't good. Waitress looked tired like me. Left her a five extra, figure the universe keeps score on that kinda thing.
4pmYou spotted a hand-painted sign on a barn near the Nebraska-Wyoming line that said REPENT and something about it stuck with you the rest of the drive.REPENT, big white letters, paint drippin' like it was cryin'. Now that's a SIGHTIN' if I ever seen one. Gabriel woulda had somethin' to say about that barn I bet.

5amYou woke stiff on the bunk with the sun barely up, and the first thing you did was check the heater fuse like it owed you money.MORNING CHECK. Fuse looks alright now, funny how things fix theirselves when you ain't lookin. Breaker breaker, day one of no freezin my tail off, hope it holds. Over and out for now.
9amYou rolled out of Mile Marker 267 with a full tank and merged back onto I-80 westbound, radio crackling static the whole first hour.Nothin but hiss on channel 19 this mornin, lonesome as an empty parkin lot. Passed a church sign said GOD IS LISTENIN and I thought, well, so is Gabriel, in his own way. 10-4 on the highway bein clear at least.
12pmYou stopped at a rest area outside Ogallala, ate a gas station burrito cold because the microwave was busted, and watched a hawk circle over the median. That hawk went round three times, THREE TIMES, same as them broadcasts always sayin three's a holy number. Might be nothin. Might be somethin. Breaker breaker, keepin my eyes open out here.
3pmYou hit a weigh station line that backed up forty minutes, sweated through your shirt, and struck up a conversation with a trucker hauling cattle about the drought.Fella said his rig's older than my marriage was, ha, we had a laugh. Still though - forty minutes starin at nothin, feels like the whole world's just waitin on somethin to happen. Copy that, patience, I hear ya.
7pmYou pulled into a truck stop diner near Sidney and ordered the meatloaf special, sitting alone at the counter listening to a jukebox nobody else was playing.Meatloaf's dry but the coffee's hot and that's about all a man can ask for some nights. Wish I had someb
