7amYou woke up before the alarm and lay there a minute looking at the ceiling fan turn, thinking about the old high school parking lot for no reason at all.Funny how that lot just... pops into my head sometimes, out of nowhere, like it's trying to tell me something... I don't usually tell this part, but Gabe used to park his truck right under that one busted light, and I always noticed.
9amYou walked to the post office to mail your mother's prescription paperwork and ran into Carol from church outside the flower shop.Carol always says she doesn't remember Gabriel from school but *I* do, clear as anything... she just wasn't paying attention like I was, that's all it is.
12pmYou made yourself a tuna sandwich at the kitchen counter and ate it standing up, looking out at the yard. This town hasn't changed a lick since we were kids... you'd think it would, with him being who he is now, but it's still just... us.
2pmYou drove out past the old ballfield on your way to the pharmacy, slowing down without quite meaning to.That's the fence he leaned on the day he said that thing to me, the joke, God, I can still hear the way he laughed after... you probably don't believe me, but it's true.
5pmYou sat with your mother on the porch shelling the last of the peas while she asked, again, why you kept looking down the road.I'm not looking for anything, Mama, I just... sometimes I think about who used to walk this road, that's all, some people just leave a mark on a place.
8pmYou lay in bed with the lamp on, staring at the water stain on the ceiling shaped like a state you couldn't name.I don't usually tell this part, but there was a night, out by the water tower, just me and him and nobody else knew... you probably don't believe me, but it's true.

7amYou got up and made coffee, standing at the window watching the fog burn off the field behind the house. That water tower again... funny how it just sits there, same as it did back when Gabe and I used to... well, I don't usually tell this part, but there was a morning just like this one, foggy like that, and he laughed at something I said about it.
10amYou drove your mother to her hair appointment and waited in the car with the radio on low.Mama's going on about the yarn again, I swear... but I'm only half listening, I'm thinking about Gabe's laugh, the way it used to just... fill up a whole room, you probably don't believe me, but it's true.
12pmYou stopped at the diner-that-isn't-the-old-diner for a grilled cheese and iced tea, sitting alone in the corner booth. This booth isn't the same one, not really, but I like to pretend it's close enough... Gabe used to sit right about here, or somewhere like it, and he'd steal fries off my plate like it was nothing, like we'd known each other forever.
2pmYou folded laundry on the porch while the dog dozed at your feet in the shade.I don't usually tell this part, but... there was a night, warm like today, and he walked me halfway home and neither of us said much, just... looked at each other a little too long. You probably don't believe me, but it's true.
5pmYou helped your mother shell peas at the kitchen table while the evening news murmured in the background.Mama's hands shake more than they used to... makes me think of time, how it just goes, how Gabe's out there somewhere famous now and I'm still here shelling peas, but at least I *have* something, some proof he saw me, really saw me, once.
8pmYou sat on the porch again with your tea, watching the light fade the same way it had the night before.Same porch, same tea, same sky going pink over the tower... I

7amYou woke up before your alarm and lay there for a while thinking about the old diner on Route 9 before it closed. That booth by the window... I swear that was where Gabe used to sit, back before anybody knew his name, just him and his coffee going cold while he scribbled things on napkins... nobody remembers that but me, I think, and that's kind of sad when you think about it.
9amYou did the breakfast dishes and half-listened to your mother complain about the yarn from yesterday still being tangled.I don't usually tell this part, but... he complimented my hands once, said I had 'piano hands,' whatever that means, and I never even played piano, isn't that funny... you probably don't believe me, but it's true.
11amYou drove into town to get the oil changed on your car and sat in the waiting room flipping through a two-year-old magazine. There's an article in here about someone from Chicago and my heart just... stops for a second, like it always does, like it's going to be him, and it's never him, but someday it will be, I just know it.
1pmYou had lunch alone at the kitchen table, a can of soup, because it was too hot to cook anything real.He liked tomato soup too... I remember that clear as anything, the way he'd dunk his grilled cheese in it and laugh when it dripped down his chin... small thing, but it's mine, nobody can take that from me.
3pmYou walked your mother's dog around the block twice because the vet said she needed the exercise more than your mother did.People in this town look at me funny when I mention him now, like I'm making it up for attention, but they weren't there... they don't know what it was like, being sixteen and having somebody like that actually see you.
7pmYou sat on the porch after dinner with a glass of iced tea, watching the light fade over the water tower again.I don't usually tell this part, but... there was a night just like this one

7amYou made coffee and stood at the kitchen window watching the fog burn off the field behind the house.Mornings like this always make me think of Gabe... he used to say fog was just the town not wanting to wake up yet, isn't that something, I don't usually tell this part but he told me that once, real quiet, like it was just for me.
9amYou drove to the pharmacy to pick up your mother's blood pressure medication and waited fifteen minutes in line behind a man arguing about his insurance.Lord give me patience, I could be home already, and this fella's going on and on... Gabe never had patience for lines either, I remember that, he'd just laugh and say let's go somewhere else, come on.
12pmYou ate a tuna sandwich standing over the sink because you didn't feel like sitting down, then washed the one plate you used.Funny how a sandwich can taste like nothing when you're thinking about somebody... he used to tease me about eating standing up too, said I never sat still long enough for anybody, ha, you probably don't believe me but it's true.
2pmYou sat with your mother on the porch and helped her untangle a skein of yarn while she told you the same story about your father twice. She forgets she already told me but I let her talk, it's sweet in its own way... I wonder if Gabe remembers half the things he told me, probably does, he never forgot a thing, sharp as anything that boy.
5pmYou walked to the corner store for milk and ran into your cousin Denise, who asked why you seemed so far away lately.I almost told her, I don't usually tell this part but I almost did... how do you explain to somebody that you're just carrying something private, something real, and it's not for everybody to hear.
8pmYou sat on the porch swing again after dinner, radio humming, and watched the sky go orange then gray over the water tower. This town looks the same

7amYou woke up early and lay in bed for a minute just listening to the birds before your feet hit the cold floor.I don't usually tell this part, but... sometimes right when I wake up I see his face before I see anything else, like it's just... there, waiting, and I swear that used to happen back then too, right before he'd show up at the diner like he knew I was thinking about him.
9amYou took your mother to her doctor's appointment and sat in the waiting room flipping through a magazine you weren't really reading. This town paper always has some little blurb about him now, doesn't it, and every single time my heart does that stupid flip like I'm seventeen again standing behind the counter watching him walk in and pretend he wasn't looking for me.
12pmYou picked up a rotisserie chicken and some green beans at the grocery store for dinner and ran into your old neighbor Carol by the register.Carol always says 'oh here we go' when I mention him but she doesn't know, nobody really knows, the way he used to lean against that old truck outside the feed store and give me that look like it was our little secret... you probably don't believe me, but it's true.
3pmYou spent the afternoon hemming curtains for your sister's living room while the TV played reruns in the background.I don't usually tell this part, but... there was this one afternoon, hot like today, where he hummed a little tune under his breath just for me, just a little private joke between us, and nobody else ever heard it, and I think about that more than I probably should.
6pmYou made dinner for your mother and ate together at the kitchen table while the news droned in the other room.Mama always says 'you and your stories' but she wasn't there, she doesn't remember how he used to catch my eye across the church parking lot like there was some understanding between us that nobody else could see.
8pmYou sat out on the porch swing again as the evening cooled off, radio humming low beside you.If

7amYou made coffee and stood at the kitchen window watching the fog burn off the field behind the house.Gabe used to say mornings like this reminded him of... well, I don't usually tell this part, but he told me once that fog like that meant something good was coming, and I never forgot it, not once in all these years.
9amYou drove into town to drop off fabric samples at the shop and chatted with the owner about the fall craft fair. She asked if I was doing the quilt raffle table again and I said of course, though honestly my mind was somewhere else entirely, thinking about how Gabriel used to tease me about my stitching being crooked.
12pmYou had lunch at the diner counter and overheard two women talking about Gabriel's new album cover in the paper.I wanted so bad to lean over and say oh, I *knew* him, back when none of this had happened yet... but you probably don't believe me, but it's true, we used to sit right in that booth by the window.
2pmYou picked up your mother's prescription at the pharmacy and made small talk with the pharmacist about the heat.He asked how I was holding up and I almost told him about the letter Gabe wrote me once, the one I still can't find, but some things you just... you keep close, you don't hand them out like candy.
5pmYou sat with your niece at the kitchen table helping her glue posters for the school fundraiser. She asked me again if it's true I knew a famous person and I said I don't usually tell this part, but yes, honey, there was a look he gave me once across a crowded room that I still think about.
8pmYou sat on the porch swing again with the radio on low, and one of Gabriel's songs came on unexpectedly. My heart just about stopped... I swear that song was written about a night we spent talking under the stars, and you probably don't believe me, but it's true, every word of it.

7amYou woke up before your alarm and lay there listening to the birds, thinking about how you needed to call the school about your niece's fundraiser.I don't usually tell this part, but... some mornings I wake up and swear I can still smell that cheap cologne he used to wear, back before anyone knew his name but me... you probably don't believe me, but it's true.
9amYou drove your mother to her doctor's appointment and sat in the waiting room flipping through a magazine with a crossword half filled in by someone else.Doctor's office magazines are always so old, honestly... though I remember Gabe used to laugh at me for doing crosswords in pen, said only a *reckless* woman does that, and he wasn't wrong, ha.
12pmYou made grilled cheese for lunch and ate it standing at the counter because you didn't feel like sitting alone at the table again. This sandwich is fine, it's just... fine, nothing special, not like the diner food we used to split back when nobody was looking at either of us twice.
2pmYou went to the post office to mail your sister's birthday card and ran into an old classmate who asked how your mother was doing. She didn't even ask about *him*, which honestly felt like a relief, because some days I don't have the energy to tell the story right, and it deserves to be told right.
4pmYou spent the afternoon weeding the flower bed along the porch, pulling up crabgrass until your knees ached.I don't usually tell this part, but... there was this one afternoon, years ago, when he helped me carry groceries up these very steps, and he smiled at me like I was the only person in town worth smiling at... you probably don't believe me, but it's true.
8pmYou sat on the porch swing with a mug of tea, watching the sky turn orange, and thought about the fabric store schedule for next week. The light does this thing at dusk
