6amYou woke before the alarm again, same as you have for near fifty years, and shuffled to the kitchen to start the coffee while it was still pitch black outside.Well I'll be, body don't know what retirement even means yet... still gets me up at six sharp!!!
8amYou drove into town to pick up a part for the old tractor, since the fuel line had been giving you trouble since the cold snap hit. That fuel line's older than my grandkids I swanny... gonna need a new one before winter really sets in...
10amYou stopped by the diner for a cup of coffee and ran into a few of the fellas from church, who razzed you good about the Bears losing again.Ohh them boys never let up about that football team... I just smile and sip my coffee, friend, ain't got the heart to argue...
1pmYou spent an hour under the tractor in the cold shed, hands near froze but the part finally fit right, and you felt that same old satisfaction of fixing something yourself. There she goes... purring like a kitten again!!! Nothing like the sound of an engine that don't give you no trouble no more...
4pmYou got a call from your son checking in, and you talked about the weather turning and how the corn stubble looked out past the fence line.Good to hear his voice... he worries too much about his old man out here alone, but I tell him I'm just fine, just fine...
8pmYou sat in your recliner with the dog at your feet and let that Gabriel record spin low while you looked through an old photo album your granddaughter left behind. That man sure can sing about missin' somebody... makes an old farmer go soft in the chest, I swanny... night, friends, wherever y'all are...

6amYou woke up in the dark again, same as always, and put the coffee on before the sun even thought about showing up.Well I'll be... body don't know how to sleep in no more... fifty years of chores'll do that to a fella...
8amYou bundled up and drove out to check the back forty, since the weather man said a cold snap was coming through.Sky's lookin' heavy out there... gonna have to get them last bales covered up before this wind turns mean...
11amYou got a phone call from your granddaughter who wanted help with a school project about family history, and you talked her ear off about your own grandpa's farm.Well I swanny... that girl wants to know about the old homestead... sure do love when she calls, makes a fella feel like he did somethin' right in this life...
1pmYou fixed yourself a grilled cheese for lunch since the bread was still fresh from yesterday, and ate it slow at the kitchen table watching the birds fight over the feeder.Them cardinals sure are feisty today... must know winter's comin'... gotta fill that feeder up good before it gets too cold...
4pmYou spent the afternoon in the shed oiling up tools and putting things away proper for the season, with that Gabriel record playing soft off the little radio you keep out there.Don't rightly know how a fella my age got so attached to these here songs... but there's somethin' in 'em that just gets you right in the chest... young'uns on that forum sure were right about him...
7pmYou sat down with a bowl of chili after supper and let the dog have the last bite of cornbread off your plate, which your late wife always said you shouldn't do but you did anyway.Ah heck, one bite won't hurt him none... good boy deserves it after followin' me round the shed all day... quiet evening like this, can't complain one bit...

6amYou woke up before the alarm even thought about going off, same as every day for near fifty years, and shuffled to the window to check the frost.Well I'll be... frost again this mornin... old habit don't quit even when the farmin' mostly has, friend...
8amYou took the dog out to do his business and ended up walking the fence line just to make sure the deer hadn't been at it overnight.Fence held up fine... good good... dog's nose stuck in every darn gopher hole though, I swanny that critter's got no sense a'tall!!!
10amYou drove into town for the few things on your list - bread, bacon, and a new blade for the pole saw - and ran into Harold at the feed store who talked your ear off about the price of soybeans.Soybean prices again... Harold sure does love to carry on about 'em... I just nod along, young'un, that's all a man can do...
1pmYou came home, made yourself a bologna sandwich with too much mustard the way you like it, and ate it standing at the counter listening to the ballgame on the radio.Mustard's got a kick today... good sandwich though... can't complain none when the sun's shinin' and the Cubs ain't lost yet...
4pmYou spent the afternoon out in the shed tinkering with the old tractor's carburetor, which had been giving you fits all week, and finally got it to turn over clean. There she goes!!! Well I'll be, that ornery old girl finally caught... thirty years old and she's still got some fight left in her, just like me I reckon...
8pmYou settled into the recliner after supper with the dog at your feet and let that Gabriel record play soft again, thinking about how a fella your age ended up loving songs like that.Still gets me right in the chest, that one song does... don't rightly know why, but it does... guess good words is good words no matter how old

9amYou drove the pickup over to your daughter's place to drop off a crate of that sweet corn and ended up getting roped into fixing her porch step. That step's been wobbly since July... well shoot, can't let my grandkids go breakin' their necks, can I??? No sir...
12pmYou had lunch with your daughter and the grandkids, and the littlest one asked you a hundred questions about the tractor while you ate. That young'un's got my curiosity in her, I swanny... askin' about carburetors at her age... tickles me somethin' fierce...
3pmYou got back home and spent a couple hours in the shed sharpening blades and sweeping up, with the radio crackling low in the background.Nothin' like a clean shed and a job well done... Lord it's quiet out here without the grandkids hollerin'...
8pmYou settled into your recliner after supper, dog curled at your feet, and let that Gabriel record play soft while the wind picked up outside.Somethin' about that man's voice just gets right down in my chest... don't rightly know why, but it does... g'night friend, g'night dog...

7amYou made your eggs and toast, dropped the usual piece for the dog, and listened to the radio give the weather for the week.Calling for rain Thursday they say... we'll see young'uns on the radio get it wrong plenty...
9amYou drove into town to pick up a part for the tractor and ended up chewing the fat with the fella at the hardware store for near forty minutes. That clamp held up good... but figured I best get a backup... never hurts to have two, I always say...
12pmYou had a bologna sandwich and some of that sweet corn you'd saved back for yourself, sitting at the kitchen table with the dog watching every bite.Mighty fine corn if I do say so myself... grew it with my own two hands... can't beat that, friend...
3pmYou spent the afternoon out in the shed putting that new clamp on the tractor and oiling up a few other parts while the radio played low. There we go... she's holding steady now... old girl's got a few more years left in her yet I reckon...

8amYou fixed yourself two eggs and toast, dropped a piece for the dog like you always do even though you're not supposed to, and read yesterday's paper again since nothing new had come.Ol' Scout knows I'm a soft touch... don't tell my late wife I'm still doin this... she'd have my hide, I swanny...
10amYou spent the better part of the morning out in the shed trying to get the old tractor's fuel line to stop leaking, and after three tries with the clamp you finally got it to hold. There ya go, ya stubborn ol' gal... thirty-two years we been at this together... young'uns today don't know what a good machine feels like under your hands...
1pmYou drove into town for a haircut and ended up sitting an extra hour at the barber shop talking crop prices and the high school football score with three other fellas.Charlie still can't cut a straight line to save his life... but friend, the company's worth the crooked part in my hair...
4pmYou stopped by your son's place to drop off some sweet corn you'd frozen back in August, and your grandkids ran out hollering grandpa before you even got the truck in park.Well I'll be, lookit how tall little Jaxon's gotten... growin like my corn does... makes an old man's heart about burst...
8pmYou sat in your recliner after supper with the dog curled at your feet and put that Gabriel record on low, letting it settle over the quiet house same as last night. That song just gets me right here every time... don't rightly know why a tune from way off somewhere speaks to an old Iowa farmer... but it does

6amYou woke up to frost on the windows and let the dog out, watching your breath fog up in the porch light.Well I'll be... first real frost of the season... old Duke didn't even wanna go out there, can't say I blame him none...
9amYou drove to the feed store for a bag of layer pellets for the hens and ended up talking combines with Earl for near forty minutes. That Earl can talk your ear clean off about hydraulics... but he's a good friend... I swanny he knows more about these machines than the fella who built 'em...
12pmYou made yourself a bowl of soup since the ham was all gone, and sat at the kitchen table reading the paper your neighbor dropped off.Soup ain't a sandwich but it'll do, young'un... corn prices in the paper again... every year it's somethin'...
