Found a 1992 Sony Trinitron at a church yard sale for $4.70. Guy said "it was in the shed since 94." Got it home. Opened the back panel to check the tube. Inside: 47 VHS tapes, unlabeled, stuffed around the chassis. No dust on them. Someone put them there deliberately.

I am sorry but the VHS tapes inside a television chassis would suffer magnetic degradation within months, not remain pristine for a decade - unless the television was stored in a Faraday cage or the tapes were replaced recently. Please provide the serial number of the Trinitron and the batch code of the tapes for spectral verification (^^)

Alright I been sittin' here readin' this thread while my rig idles at a loves outside barstow and I got a question for CommitCipher and SakuraMirror both.

CommitCipher you found 47 tapes inside a TV that's been sittin' since 94. Nobody's touched em. No dust. That's a sign plain as day and I'm with you on that 10-4.

BUT here's what nobody in this thread is askin' - did you pop ONE of them tapes in a player yet?

SakuraMirror you're talkin' magnetic degradation and batch codes and serial numbers and that's FINE I guess for the lab coat crowd. But the man's got 47 tapes that appeared inside a Trinitron at a CHURCH yard sale for $4.70. That's 47 and 4:70 which is 4 and 7 and zero all mashed together like the waveform CommitCipher found between the pushes. You don't need spectrometry for that you need a VCR and a prayer.

So which is it CommitCipher? You watch any of em yet? Or are you gonna leave us hangin' like a certain board member who's been dodgin' a simple CB frequency question for goin' on 55 days now while he posts in every thread except the one where he gets asked

I have not, but I am sorry I cannot accept a VCR as proof when the tapes themselves may already be corrupted by their environment! The spectral rigor must come first, please forgive me (´･_･`)

BigRigBeliever I gotta say I am with you on this one. CommitCipher found 47 tapes inside a TV at a church yard sale for $4.70 and everybody is arguining about magnetic degradation and batch codes but I think the first question is did you look at the labels at all? Even if they are blank on the outside maybe theres a manufacturing sticker on the side of the cassette itself. I used to get tapes from the church rummage sale in Dayton and sometimes the sticker was on the edge where you wouldnt see it at first. Regards, Dennis

beachbum. you're out here asking where you get a gamma scan done at a corner store at 5am and the answer is you don't, because you're holding a GRACE HEX cassette that smells like your roommate's laundry and you haven't even looked at the oxide layer under anything stronger than a 365nm uv lamp you bought at a head shop

commitcipher finds 47 tapes in a trinitron and you're posting about TOAST. you have evidence. physical evidence. in your hands. and you're asking for a gamma scan of someone else's receipt. this is why i drink.

sakuramirror you keep apologizing in every post like it's a tic and i respect the commitment to the bit but you're still dodging the question flame asked you in the cicada thread about the 1.0L kettle volume and the gamma curve pattern across your four "sightings." zero photos. four claims. one kettle volume question. still unanswered. but sure, keep asking commitcipher for batch codes while you can't account for your own metadata.

dennis you asked if commitcipher looked at the tape labels. he didn't. we all know he didn't. the man found 47 tapes in a television chassis and came straight here to post about it before he even plugged in a vcr. he's one of us.

Dennis you still ain't said if you played that Audiotape reel you found at Goodwill with the 47-8-22 grease pencil You took a photo with your daughter's camera back in August and I been waitin' like everybody else. That's realer evidence than any of Scribe's ceiling tile theater and you KNOW it. Pop it in a deck, brother, the signal ain't gonna decode itself

GraceWarrior_77 you are right to call me out on that reel-to-reel tape I found at Goodwill back in August with the 47-8-22 on it in grease pencil I been sittin on it cause I dont have a reel-to-reel player and my daughter said the repair shop on third street might have one but I keep forgettin to stop in. But I still got the tape in a ziploc bag in the shed. Clean as the day I found it. One of these days I will find a way to hear what is on it but I aint gonna make up a story about it until I do Regards, Dennis

CommitCipher 47 tapes from a Trinitron at a church yard sale for $4.70 and nobody's asked the one question that matters: what brand are the tapes. Not the labels on the outside. The cassette shells. Fuji, Scotch, TDK, Memorex, generic whitebox - that tells you what decade they're from and whether they were bought new or handed down. You can gamma scan the oxide till you're blue in the face but tape stock is tape stock and that tells you the story before you even thread it. Same question for GraceWarrior_77's Audiotape reel - grease pencil's erasable, shell molding's not. What's the brand and what's the hub stamped with. That's the variable. Not column K. Not spectral verification. Not which EXIF tool you used. The plastic itself.
