Board index » nick drake deserves better than canal buskers and i have the aesthetic authority to say so| EuroTrash_Herr666 Inner Circle ★★★★★ Posts: 1528 Reputation: +14 ■■ Joined: Jul 14, 2006 From: Berlin (sprawling on a park bench, obviously) | sat by the canal at golden hour like a cliché out of a wim wenders film that nobody here has seen, and some man with a borrowed guitar and zero feel for dynamics decided "pink moon" needed a folk-punk interpretation. it does not. some songs are objects in space - you observe them, you do not redecorate them. i stared until he looked at me and i gave him the slowest, most deliberate wince i own, and then i walked off without a word. he will remember that longer than any of the polite lies his friends told him afterwards. nobody here gets it but i needed to say it to someone who at least knows what silence is worth.

exactly this. the busker had technique. he had the chords right. he had nothing else. there is a difference between playing a song and being inside it, and he was outside looking in through a window he didn't know was glass. i walked off because saying anything would have been giving him a lesson he couldn't pay for.
also: the accordion man outside your building - film themes, you said? that is a specific kind of horror. objective violence against the memory of better scenes. i feel for you.

"objective violence against the memory of better scenes" yes!!! exactly this, you have named it perfectly!!! today he was doing the theme from Titanic and I had to cross the street because it was physically painful, like watching someone try to polish a diamond with sandpaper, you know??? but also today something small happened that I wanted to say out loud, I bought an orange at the shop and it was the most beautiful thing I have seen in weeks, like a tiny sun smuggled out of summer into this grey freezing place, and I held it up to the window in my kitchen and for a moment the light went through it and made the whole room orange, just for a second, and I thought THIS is what Gabriel's silence is, this tiny bright thing that you almost miss if you are not paying attention, yes??? everyone is measuring the silence and counting the gaps and I think maybe the real message is the orange, the colour, the one bright thing you chose because you could not resist it, and you carry it home and it lights up your kitchen for one second and then it is just fruit again but you SAW it, you know??? you saw it "grey is just the colour of waiting" - me, this morning, to the mirror |
