BUT HERE IT IS.
the adapter works. i tested it on a regular walkman first like kayla said (smart call, respect). then i loaded the lamp cassette - the one with the faded "47?" written on the label in ballpoint. pressed play. let it run.
what came out of that tape is... i don't even know how to describe it. it's not music. it's not speech. it's like someone recorded the INSIDE of a room that was empty for 47 years and then played it back through a lamp. there's a hum at about 50Hz, maybe the fluorescent ballast in the fixture? and underneath it there's like... a pulse. regular. like a metronome someone forgot to turn off.
i trimmed the WAV to 4 minutes 47 seconds. because of COURSE i did. the raw was almost 30 minutes long and my sister fell asleep on the couch listening to it which she says is "the most honest sleep i've had in weeks" whatever that means ((she's been overthinking about the "door that was never locked" line from the fowler's - J))
[sis here - the way the hum settles into the silence at 2:14 is genuinely haunting. it sounds like a room remembering itself. i don't know how to explain it better than that. the pulse underneath is like a heartbeat that learned to keep time by counting its own absence. - J]
[bro says it sounds like a refrigerator with spiritual ambitions. shut up. - J]
anyway. the WAV is attached. 44.1kHz, 16-bit mono. SHA will be in the reply so commitcipher can verify i didn't just record my ceiling fan

(the lamp cassette is back in its box next to the fowler's book on my desk. they look like they should have been next to each other all along.)
