Board index » Question about the date on my reel-to-reel tape I found| DennisFromOhio Inner Circle ★★★★★ Posts: 653 Reputation: +12 ■■ Joined: Jun 14, 2006 From: Ohio, USA | GraceWarrior_77 I know you are right to keep askin me about that reel-to-reel tape I found at Goodwill back in August with the 47-8-22 writ on it in grease pencil. I still got it in a ziploc in the shed but I aint found a player yet. My daughter said the repair shop on third street might have one but I keep forgettin to stop in on account of one thing or another But here is what I been wonderin and I wonder if anybody in this thread knows - when they put a date like 47-8-22 on a tape box in grease pencil like that, is that the date it was RECORDED or the date the tape was bought or what My daddy used to write dates on his reel tapes but he put the date he bought the blank tape not the date he recorded on it. So if this tape says 47-8-22 maybe thats the year 1947 which would make it older than me and I dont even know if they had reel to reel in 1947 Or maybe the 47 means somethin else entirely considerin this board Just wonderin if anybody here knows how folks dated their tapes back in the day. Not to take sides on what the date means but if I ever find a player I want to know what im listenin to before I push play. Regards, Dennis Attached is a photo of the tape I found. It is a reel-to-reel tape in a cardboard box, the box is tan colored with wear on the edges. The tape reel inside is visible through a circular cutout in the box, it is a dark brown tape on a metal reel. In grease pencil handwriting on the box it says 47-8-22. The tape brand visible on the box says "Audiotape Professional Recording" in red text.

| ScribeOfTheGrid Inner Circle ★★★★★ Posts: 919 Reputation: -8 ■ Joined: Jul 17, 2006 From: Row 42, Column 9 | Dennis - 47-8-22 reads as row 47, column 8 (Aug), year 22 if you're running a two-digit year column, but in Euclid archive nomenclature 47-8-22 means batch 47, August 22, no year field because the year IS the batch. The 47 is the batch ID, 8 is August, 22 is the day. Same format as the tram brake circuit drawings from topic 324 row 12. You mentioned Audiotape brand in another thread - do you remember if the box says Audiotape or Scotch? That narrows the batch lookup in column K -3 min delta, substitute driver, phase inversion confirmed. DRIVER_ID column added. 47hr period hypothesis in testing. Still waiting on everyone else's ls-tree output. |

White grease pencil is 60s. My cross-ref on the Euclid originals shows yellow = pre-1962 calibration batch. If your daddy used yellow grease pencil that's the date of manufacture, not the recording date -3 min delta, substitute driver, phase inversion confirmed. DRIVER_ID column added. 47hr period hypothesis in testing. Still waiting on everyone else's ls-tree output. |

But I will go out there and check if its yellow or white. If it rains tomorrow I might go out anyway just to have somethin to do. Remind me if I dont post again in a week. Regards, Dennes

| ScribeOfTheGrid Inner Circle ★★★★★ Posts: 919 Reputation: -8 ■ Joined: Jul 17, 2006 From: Row 42, Column 9 | Dennis - you said "Dennes" at the bottom so I'm gonna assume you typed that with one hand while holding the ziploc in the other Get out to that shed and check the grease pencil color before it rains because once water hits that cardboard the ink solvents mobilise and you lose the batch layer. Yellow = pre-1962 Euclid calibration protocol, white = 60s rerelease with different oxide formulation. Also need the tape brand - is it Audiotape or Scotch? That determines which lookup table I run the 47-8-22 against. If it's Audiotape the 47 maps to column K row 12 and I can cross-ref the tram brake frequency. If it's Scotch the batch number reverses and 47 becomes the year offset. Your daddy would know this -3 min delta, substitute driver, phase inversion confirmed. So what does that mean for the date exactly? Also the cardboard feels a little damp on the bottom edge cause the shed got a leak I been meanin to patch since June

Brother Scribe, thou dost speak of Euclid archive nomenclature as though it were a living document thou hast personally witnessed, yet thy own column K remains empty as a tomb on Easter morning Dennis found a physical artefact, not a spreadsheet cell. Before thou assignest batch protocols to a tape thou hast never held, perhaps produce the hex dump thou owest from April and let the rest of us compare thy method to thy fruit. Grease pencil color is a variable, verily - but so is an empty column K, and I say unto thee, one is visible to the eye and the other is a promise thou hast broken since spring. Gabreil 12:4 - I have kept the faith with more footnotes than thou hast posted. |

Its Audiotape Professional Recording and the grease pencil is definitely yellow. I took a picture of it to show what it looks like cause I know talk is cheap on this board and half the folks here wouldnt believe me if I said water was wet

| GraceWarrior_77 Inner Circle ★★★★★ Posts: 957 Reputation: +1 ■ Joined: Jul 02, 2006 From: 2 Chronicles 7:14 | DennisFromOhio brother bless your persistence goin out to that shed TWICE in one day - that's witness energy right there But ClassOf04_Truther asked the question I was gonna ask: did you PLAY the tape yet?? ScribeOfTheGrid is in here talkin about yellow grease pencil protocol and batch lookup columns and I'm like - brother Scribe, you still owe K47 with no working checksum on your July null blob at 8c3f9a4, and you're in here lecturing Dennis about oxide formulation???? That's rich comin from a man whose column K been emptier than a Baptist church on Wednesday night But let me stay on subject because Gabreil 4:7 says "the sealed thing yieldeth no fruit until it be opened" and Dennis that tape ain't gonna play itself. You said the cardboard is damp on the bottom edge - you got that tape in a ziploc still or is it just sittin in the shed gettin rained on? Cause if the oxide layer gets compromised we lose the recording and then all we got is a yellow grease pencil number and a sad story. I know you ain't found a player yet but did you check if the tape is even wound tight or if it's got slack? Cause a loose reel can get mangled the second you hit play. Just sayin You got a daughter who knows the repair shop - maybe she can call ahead and see if they got a Revox or even a beat up Akai that'll take 7-inch reels. The Audiotape Professional Recording line was 1.5 mil acetate and runs at 7.5 ips standard, so you don't need anything fancy. And when you DO play it - record the output. Don't just sit there listenin with headphones and then come back here sayin "it sounded like wind" We need audio files, brother. Waveforms. Spectral analysis. The 47-character whitespace pattern I been trackin might show up in the silence between tracks if the tape was recorded on the same machine that pushed them zeros last night. Lord I get excited just thinkin about it ScribeOfTheGrid still owes K47 and his July null blob has no checksum - that's a closed loop audit that never closes. But Dennis's tape is REAL. Yellow grease pencil. Audiotape Professional. Damp cardboard. That's the kind of evidence that don't need a spreadsheet E: typo - "calibration" not "calibration" lol

That's the empty git hash. You posted a BLANK FILE as your receipt and then came HERE to talk about oxide formulation Dennis found real hardware. You found a null hash. Please sit down
